If I understand correctly, the Kindle Fire does have a sleep timer but how do I access it and set it. I see where you can have it set from 1 minute to NEVER but I don't see where to activate it. If it's always set, why doesn't it go off when watching a video. I wanted to listen to music and then have it go off after a set amt. of time.

Dana, it doesn't go off when watching video or in certain apps because there it's specifically turned off.

For example, if it wasn't set off then you would have to keep unlocking the screen every 2 minutes (if you had set sleep timer to 2 minutes).

For something like music it will work. Just set it to 1 minute, start the song, and then wait a minute. You could also press the power switch once to set it to sleep yourself.

That makes sense. Also during a video, there is movement on the screen. I'll try the test you mentioned above. Thanks so much. I'm loving my Fire! Just want to make sure I am taking advantage of all it has to offer.

It will do this already with the music files. You have to press power to get back into the screen yet your music files are playing with the screen off.

Dana Rogers says:
So you're saying that the music would play until the battery died?

Yes unless you shut it off (or had it plugged in).

Where did you find the sleep timer feature? Is it on the Fire or did you download an app?

Could someone please explain the sleep timer feature again? I have a radio app and want to program the kindle to shut down after 15 or 20 minutes automatically. Sometimes I see a circle with a number in the middle which seems to have something to do with locking or unlocking the kindle but haven't figured this out at all.

I, too, am wanting this feature!! I want to listen to the white noise app I downloaded while I go to sleep, but would like it to shut off after 20-30 minutes!!

Wouldn't the Screen Timeout feature work here?
*quick settings > more > display > screen timeout

I don't think that works. It may shut off the screen but not the radio app I use. I don't see a wa to have a timed shutdown of the whole kindle fire.

Buy Tune-In-Radio Pro for 99 cents. It has a timer that turns off App. You can listen to any radio station in the world that streams.

I would like the kindle to have a general sleep timer, so that the whole tablet turns itself off after a set time, whatever you are using at the time. I tried downloading an alarm clock app with a sleep timer on it, but it just turned off the clock app! Come on Amazon, help! I love my kindle and this is my one gripe - apart from the 'hidden' camera app, but let's not go there :)

is there a case available for the kindle fire that shuts the device on and off when you open and close it ,the same as for the hd version

evemarine says:
I have realised with the HD that the screen display shuts off when the screen is not exposed to light, so its the action of closing the case front, or placing the kindle screen down may do it ? The display is what uses the most battery.

That's a deal clincher for me. When I read that a Kindle has an easy-to-set and reliable sleep timer I can use while falling asleep to my Audible book, I'll get a Kindle. Seems kind of simple, but --going by the comments, above -- Kindle can fly you to the moon but doesn't even have a donkey to ride to the next village!

I now use Audible for my audio books which has a sleep timer in it's app. Also if you have the cover closed, ie screen not lit up, it uses hardly any battery anyway so am now happy with the kindle for listening to audio books, despite it not having an in built timer as such..

Thanks, Yvette! Yes, I've heard you can do that. I did check out that app and will do so again. But I'm kind of waiting for a Kindle that does the work for me!

Just found an app in the Appstore called sleep timer. It is the one with the picture of the bed. I'm not quite sure of it's extents as to what it will shut off, but it works for mp3s played on the kindle.

I downloaded this app two days ago and it works perfectly, still can't quite understand why its taken so long for one to be produced but excellent that it has now and for free too!
