I pulled my Kindle out today and the screen was off. Thinking I left it on and the battery drained I plugged in it. However the charging light did not even come on. It has been plugged in for an hour or two now and nothing. What do I do?

There's no answer for a dead Kindle that this forum can provide better than the advice to call Amazon's Kindle support number. They have a good reputation for resolving Kindle problems.

I had this issue before with my wife's Kindle. Charge it. Turn both switches off. Then take the battery off. Put the battery back in. Turn the switch on.

You might have to repeat this process a few times and at times just let it rest.

That worked for my wife's Kindle. It took about 5 minutes after the batteries were fully charged. Yours will most likely come back on.

Thank you. I didn't even have to unhook the battery cable. I made sure it was seated well and turned it on. It seems fine now. I will try charging it more often.

This has happened to me twice. The first time I called Kindle support. Take off the back. There's a small hole there. Then take the end of a paperclip and insert it. Works for me.

Awesome that reset button advice worked well

Michael Hare says:
Yes, but why do we need to reset it so often? My wife has had to reset her's twice just this evening. And a couple of times over the last week.

It doesn't seem right that it should happen that often.

Y. J. Marie says:
Michael Hare you are right. I had mine since October 2008 and I've been constantly using it the past 2 weeks and I've never had to reset. I also have a Sony reader since December 2007 and I've never had to reset it.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 17, 2009, 9:18:04 PM PST
Michael Hare, that is absolutely a problem with your Kindle. You need to CALL Kindle support, use the and let them know.

I was freaking out about my kindle. I could not get it to turn on. I was about to start crying, then I read your posts. I did the reset and it's working. Thank god!!! Thanks to everyone who posted.

My Kindle just froze up for the first time tonite. I have never turned this machine off in the 6 months that I've owned it. Tonite I accidently turned the machine off instead of turning off the Whispernet. It worked fine when I turned it back on but a couple of hours later it would not leave the screensaver. When I hit the two buttons I would just get a new screensaver. I was so scared. I was immediately thinking I should have another for backup. : ) (Panic moment there!)

Then I remembered the advise about the paperclip and reset button and it now appears fine.

Thank you K Gurus!

From the User Guide at this link

--If your Kindle does not power on or is unresponsive during use, try resetting the device by
disconnecting your Kindle from any power source, and then sliding and holding the power
switch for 15 seconds before releasing.--

This advice did not work for the Kindle 1 that I just gave to my sister. I got the new Kindle 2. For some reason the reset did not turn the device on. It did temporarily cause the amber light to come on when powered. I also removed the battery and reconnected but still no dice. Now I need to determine the warranty on this thing. Not happy.

Pamela - I'm glad I found your post. I was gutted when my new K2 (two weeks), fully laden with 100 bucks worth of new books, would not start or even recharge. I did try the 15 second rule and it lurched back to life. I'm afraid to turn the thing off again. Is it alright to leave it on in the sleep mode? Other ideas to avoid the Kindle coma?

Bufo Calvin says:
Scott, many of us almost always go to sleep mode, and that's fine. Turning it off shouldn't have caused that problem, though.

Kindles won't turn on, can't get my kindle to turn off, I can't find the button...this place is startin' to look like a Dr. Ruth column.

To the OP: Put the kids with a sitter, take your kindle to a fine hotel, order wine and decadent desserts from room service, put on some soft music and tell your kindle how much it means to you.

If that doesn't work, talk dirty to it ;)

Maybe you've got your answer. I moved and held the power switch for a full 15 seconds and it switched on. No problems since then.

My Kindle 1 was dead, with lots of silver dots on the LCD strip. I'd heard that once that happens its totally dead but I decided to do the following and it worked!
1. Unplug it from the charger

2. Remove battery cover on back

3. Remove the battery so its only attached by the cords plugged into the battery socket

4. Gently press the edge of the open paper clip on the edge of the battery plug to ease it "gently" out of the socket, so that your battery is completely removed

5. Wait 1 minute, then plug it "gently" back into the socket and fully replace the battery in it's compartment

6. Plug it it and turn the power button on

7. "Gently" push the tip of the paperclip into the reset hole for 2 seconds

Hopefully like mine, yours will start up again. Then recharge it until the light is green again.

Good luck!

Craig T says:
Kindle 2: Hold the power switch for a really, really long time, like 15 seconds or more. Set it down. Cross your fingers. After another 10 seconds or so, it will come back on.

I do so love it when you whisper sweet nothings in my ear...

Sweet nothings? Sweet NOTHINGS!?!? I'll have you know that everything I whisper is fraught with meaning, FRAUGHT! ...positively crawling with meaning, I mean like, like, total meaning infestation! ...except for maybe this, and, um, everything else, but other than that, FRAUGHT!
