Why no more free ebooks for New Zealand?

Chapter One says:
There seems to be a glitch in the system that has resulted in not one of the 'free' ebooks listed on the Top 100 lists ever being free for us in NZ.
There have always been some that are not available here or no longer free, but for several days now not one book on the list is free, ever. They show as free on the main list but when you click through to buy them, the prices jumps up.
This is happening to many Kindle users, its not an isolated case effecting just a few. All our country and address details are correct.
Many of us have emailed Amazon about this but they just reply with standard answers that dont address the problem. They just dont seem to get what the problem is.
Very frustrating!!!

Sorry, don't know what to tell you to help, but you might be interested to note that for several days now, the freebie-listing site that many use, has had this banner on the top of its site:

"There is currently an issue with the pricing and availability reflected to users in New Zealand. We are working on resolving this as soon as possible."

So you're right, this is a systemic problem (and one I doubt ereader itself can solve; definitely sounds like something has changed at Amazon.) At one point recently people from the Netherlands were also complaining that their free access was cut off. Not sure what happened there. Have you tried escalating up through CS - so whenever they ask if they've solved your problem you answer no?

At the top of the ereaderiq page, it is stated that they have a problem re: New Zealand and are working on it. Be patient.

The same is happening to me in Mexico, I thought it was just me but now I see that it seems a problem for users outside US :(

It's a shame that us Kiwis seem to have been excluded from the freebies. Nothing on the Top 100 is free anymore when I check. and both havelong lists of ebooks that show as being freebies but Amazon have them all priced.

Amazon CS just say we have to pay because of taxes in our state (?) or that the author has decided the book is not to be free for NZ. That really sucks Amazon.

Loz says:
If you read Emerald Coast's post, you will see that there is a problem at the moment with New Zealand pricing. Also, if you go to ereaderiq you will see the notice at the top of the page regarding this.

There are ways around it though if there are some books you absolutely HAVE to have...

I have the same issue and I am in NZ too. I think it's affecting all of us. Hope Amazon fix it soon. I have escalated to Amazon customer services

I am having exactly the same problem in Sweden this last week. I have had my Kindle for a year and ordered lots of books from the free list, and they have actually been FREE. This last week most of the books on the free list have a price when you click on them.
I have e-mailed Amazon several times, and also told them that I have seen from the discussions that a lot of other customers are experiencing the same thing. This is the kind of reply I get:

"Pricing of titles from the Kindle Store varies by your country or region due to differences in digital list prices, local market segment prices, and tax rates."

But they don't answer the question why the pricing so suddenly has changed! If Amazon changes the policy and stops offering books for free, that's OK as long as they are open with it, but it is very annoying with a "free" list where everything has a price!

CBRetriever says:
it goes along with the books in your recommendeds list that show as not being available, but if you click on them, they miraculously are available

also, the recommendeds prices have no bearing on reality either - they used to, but they don't right now

and, I'm in France, to add to the United Nations here

I wonder if this is permanent or a temporary glitch? I'm glad my Kindle is well stocked at the moment.

i'm in NZ and I found this problem a few weeks ago, but it came right, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just be patient and keep checking back.

I just copied this information off another user thread.....

This information is now available on

"Why are there no new free books for my country?

As of the end of June, some countries have not seen any new free books on our site. Below are the countries and regions we are aware of:
Africa - no new releases have been available for this entire region since June 29th.
Asia & Pacific - this region is showing new releases, but none have been available to New Zealand since late June.
Europe - this region is showing new releases, but none have been available to the Netherlands, Norway, possibly Germany and possibly France since late June.
We are aware that there are probably more countries affected but, unfortunately this is out of our control as pricing and availability are controlled by Amazon and/or the authors and publishers.
We have tried to find a way to list free books for the affected countries but, as far as we can tell, there just aren't any new free books to show. We do not know whether this is a glitch on Amazon's end or whether it is a business decision made by them or by the publishers.
If you have any questions regarding the availability of free books to your country or region, please contact Amazon directly.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and hope things get back to normal soon.
Thank you for using!"

Thanks for your post, we can join all together in the other post as well, because it looks the trend it's almost global, not only a NZ topic.

I had a live chat today with Amazon. The free books will no longer be available in NZ. At first they said it was glitch but when I kept demanding an answer and the name of the technician they had referred it to they refused to provide it. I cancelled the chat then recieved this email:
This email is with regard to our recent chat communication.

Previously, the international customers used to have the access to "Top 100 Paid or Top 100 Free"on list but due to recent change in policy the link has been removed because the pricing of titles from the Kindle Store varies by your country or region due to differences in digital list prices, local market segment prices, and tax rates.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused. If you wish to purchase free books then you can visit the below link :

Well I have just had a chat with two people on Amazon, and all they basically say is they will pass the information on. So why would the previous comment make you want to stick with Amazon. Bad press is not a good thing for a business

Hi Cheryl, There is another discussion taking place on this exact same topic, but for a lot of countries outside the US. Do you mind if I copy this post to the other discussion? They have been unable to get any straight answers out of Amazon.
