I would like to know how to stop unwanted ads. I was in photos on my new HD and this popup saying "Are you Single" keeps cropping up on top of the screen. Someone please tell me how to rid this trash off my Kindle. I've read where ads could be a result of downloading and running free software but photo's are part of the system and was not downloaded from anywhere.

It could be a app that is running in the background.

Amazon does not have pop up ads like that.

Delete any free apps, one by one, until the problem stops. When it does, don't reinstall the last app.

Somebody says:
I'm someone who had trouble with pop-up ads on my Fire 8.9". I deleted all my free apps and the problem has gone away. The ads would be in my in the first spot on the carousel each time I turned on the Fire. Very annoying. Now my Fire is ad-free and I don't miss any of the apps I deleted. At first I thought I'd put them back on the Fire one at a time till I found the culprit, but now I don't think I'll bother.

Good luck tracking down the culprit on your Fire. I think the ads are sneaky in that they don't necessarily show up right after downloading a free app. I think they're designed to let some time pass so it's harder to track down who's doing it.

A general rec, before downloading an app, check the reviews and see if people are complaining about popup ads.

In all fairness to Amazon, my criticism below is without merit. And I will admit that I did not read any of the pre-purchase warnings that I would have normally seen had I actually purchased this in a normal manner. I posted the details on how it came to be in a post below.

If anyone feels an apology is due, please help yourself to one off of my stack of unused apology cards. They are right over there next to my "Help me get my foot out of my mouth sign!" :>)

The statement that Amazon has no pop up ads is disingenuous at best. And it is a damn lie if anyone in the Amazon organization says it.

I have had a kindle for two weeks and every time I lay it down without turning it off to stop the wi-fi connection, it loads some advertising for new listings. So to continue reading where I left off I have to go through the detail page for the unwanted solicitation and then re-open the the book I was reading.

And I don't want the ads and don't feel that I should have to put up it them.

I now turn the Kindle off (hold the power button down until it blinks a few times) and back on when I want to use it.

This is my device, I bought it and it was not a gift from Amazon. It is simply rude and egregious that they think they have a right to send me unwanted solicitations.

I get the vast majority of the ebooks I read from open sources and don't intend to ever buy a book from Amazon.

Jack, the OP is talking about pop up ads that come from free apps.

You are talking about Special Offers. Which you can opt out of. Go to Manage Your Kindle / Manage Your Devices. You opt out there. You'll pay the $15-$20 that you saved when you bought the device.

did you buy the cheaper special offers kindle or the ad free one?

and have you turned recommendations off?

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 20, 2013, 9:17:59 AM PDT
Jack, it sounds like you did NOT read the product description page before purchasing the Fire. There are two versions - the cheaper version has SPECIAL OFFERS. Per - Kindle Fire HD 7", Dolby Audio, Dual-Band Wi-Fi, 16 GB - Includes Special Offers (Previous Generation - 2nd)

Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers
You'll receive special offers and sponsored screensavers directly on your Kindle Fire HD. Examples of special offers and sponsored screensavers include:
Movie posters, music covers, and book covers for upcoming titles
Deals on digital content, for example: 1 of 10 top-rated Kindle books for $1, or $5 to spend in the Amazon MP3 Store
Deals on consumer electronics, for example: save up to $500 on select HDTVs
Your offers display on the lock screen and in small text on the lower left hand corner of the home screen-they don't interrupt use of the device. If you would like to opt out of these special offers, you can do so through Manage Your Kindle for $15 after you have registered your device.

Notice, they tell you what you have to do to turn off the special offers. You purchased the cheaper version and now complain??

Don't buy an ad supported device and you will not have them. Amazing how that works. Of course all you had to do was READ the product page.....

OK, you guys are all correct. And thanks for making me smarter.

I did get caught in a little white lie, I did not buy the kindle. Yet.

A neighbor asked me to help her get her new Kindle going. When I did that (it was new, constantly re-booting, and would not stop) I wound up on the phone with tech support and a promise of a replacement came to me. I had logged the bad one to my wi-fi and amazon account to let tech support trouble shoot it. A while later the defective kindle updated it's software and it fixed itself.

So I had a working D00901 that I was going to have to send back to Amazon or pay for. So right now I am still using it and may elect to keep it for the $69 charge.

So I am now playing with it but did not know about all the opt out stuff because I had never actually bought one.

But now I am older and smarter and won't complain about this any more as it was my ignorance of it all that put me here.

Thanks for the help!

Someone can and has given the solution in this very thread. Go back and read it from the beginning. We'll wait.

Before you download a free app, you need to remember that nothing in the world is free. Not education, not healthcare, nothing. So, before you welcome the "free" app into your life, consider how you might possibly be paying for it. Advertisements? Bingo.
