If I buy the ad version, can I later pay $20 to disable it?

about the screen, should I wait for what hopefully would be a better one without the four dark spots on the bottom or take the plunge now? I own a Nook Glowlight and I'm fairly happy with it, but I would like to try the Kindle Paperwhite, either now or when the next version comes out.

Yes, you can opt out later if you decide to. Those "dark spots" are due to how the LED lights shine the light up the screen. When the lights are set correctly for the ambient light, they aren't that noticeable. IMO

I read a couple of hours per day, and really, just do not notice the shadows at all. I've never seen the nook.

You can return it within 30 days if you aren't happy with it, as long as you buy it from Amazon.

I had the Nook Glowlight for awhile. I liked it until the light burned a hole through the screen after 97 days. Warranty only lasted 90 days and, when I contacted B and N, I was told there was nothing they could do. So, I switched to the kindle with the kindle keyboard and loved that even more, except I missed having a light inside the device.

Recently, I took the plunge and bought a Paperwhite. I am in LOVE with it. Mine does not have the dark "shadows" at the bottom of the is evenly lit throughout. I guess I got lucky. However, my friend also has a PW and hers does have the "shadows" but she says it's never bothered her and she never even noticed it until I pointed it out. (Oops...) She says they never reach the text, so she doesn't notice them.

Whether or not the "shadows" are an issue depends to some extent on how you set the light. Mine normally has no noticeable shadows but if I want shadows I can get them.
