How to have beta readers email me kindle notes

I sent my personal kindle mobi file to a few beta readers. I made them add my email as an approved Personal Document email, and I emailed the mobi file to them to their email addresses.

However, when they go to they do not see their highlights.

I thought we did it right, so the highlights would show up.

Now I have a bunch of notes on my beta reader's different devices (iPad3, Galaxy S4, etc...) but no way to get their notes.

I searched and it looks like these notes should be syncing and other posts having found a way to get them any other way.

How do my beta readers get me their notes?

Unless the book is part of their library, their notes will not be saved for them on the Kindle site. Does it appear on their MYK page? If not, it's not part of their library.

If it does appear on their MYK page, make sure that synchronization is turned to ON on the MYK page, and that their Kindle is set to Annotations ON in settings.

Yes. My book appears in their MYK page.

Yes, they have both whispersync enabled on the MYK page and on their devices, Annotations are set to on.

Do they at least show up in their MyClippings file? I know e-ink readers have that file once a note or bookmark is created, but not sure about the Fires.

One is an Kindle Fire, and I can't find a MyClippings file. Another is an iPad and no MyClippings file. Another is a Samsung Galaxy S4, again, no clippings file.

I am starting to think I made a huge mistake using Kindle for my beta readers. It seemed so easy to let them highlight and note on errors, then email me the notes.

If only the "email me the notes" part could be done.

One last question, and then I don't think I have any more suggestions. In the Kindle apps, after they open the book and click/tap on View, then Notes and Bookmarks (the wording may not be exactly the same, but they should be able to figure it out), are any notes and marks listed? If so, did they connect to wireless and sync after making those notes and marks? They have to sync in order to send that info to Amazon's servers? After they sync, I'm not sure if the notes and marks display right away, so you should give it a day.

Yes. All the notes are list in the Kindle app. Yes, we connected to wireless and synced. He started reading and noting last week end, so if they were going to show up, they should be there by now.

Then I got nothing.

Hi Rhyous- Did you ever find a solution to this problem, because I'm having the same issue. From what I understand, Kindle Highlights only makes BOOK highlights available, not documents. And the files sent to our beta readers are docs not Amazon Kindle books....

No, I did not find a solution. Unless the book is purchased content from Amazon, it doesn't show up on Kindle Highlights.

Amazon support never got back to me as to whether it should or shouldn't store highlights for personal documents. It is my guess they either they turned this feature off or it is a bug that they have never fixed.

They don't sync highlights to the site for personal documents, which these books are.

Your only hope is readers with e-ink Kindles, which will have a My Clippings.txt file that they can look at and send you a copy of, after editing out the highlights from other books.

R, may I ask how you and your beta readers are dealing with ms format for reading and their notes and comments?

Posted on Feb 11, 2014, 2:30:38 PM PST
I didn't send anyone but my editor MS format. As an editor, she used the track changes feature with ease.

For my proofreaders, I used Sigil to make an eBook and kindlegen to convert the ebook to a mobi. I would then send my work to reviewers as an eBook.

Here are some features that Amazon needs to become the reviewer technology of choice.

1. Ability to send a book to reviewers before it is published (but for the reviewers, they get the book just as if they purchased it from Amazon).
2. That ability for me to see all the reviewers notes and highlights as they make them (or at least when they next sync).

I am considering using Google Play beta readers next time. It has a cool Quality Reviewers section where you can add a reviewers email: "These users will be able to view the complete eBook in their Google Play accounts even if it is not for sale."

I just need to evaluate if getting notes off of Google Play Books is easier, too. If so, then I will use Google Play Books instead of Amazon Kindle next time.

I agree R. It seems to be becoming a Google world out there lately. I'll check out their Play Books. thanks for the great post.
