I tend to use kindle ereaders along with iPads for tablets. My wife's iPad 1 is long in the tooth and as she's not picky I was going to upgrade to the IPad Air and she would take my iPad 3 hand-me-down.

After swapping it out twice, the Airs seem to be noticeably yellower than the iPad 3. We do have a Kindle Fire HD and I noticed while the white background when reading is more uniform, it's not as white as my iPad 3 was.

I'm considering just returning the iPad Air and going with the HDX. Does anyone who has both or played with both know if the HDX line improved the "white" factor, especially in comparison to the Air. I like the whites to be very white and so far that seems to be few and far between.

If you purchase from Amazon, you have 30 days to return it - no questions asked. That may be the way to go so you can determine if the Kindle meets your requirements.

Ryan, I too have the iPad 3 (LTE 4G) and I am REALLY considering getting the HDX 8.9 (LTE 4G) for business and personal use. The two key reasons- the light weight (the iPad 3 is HEAVY) and the color resolution is just outstanding, it truly is better than the iPad Air....

I'm still working my way through iPad roulette. I have a decent but not a great screen but always found the Kindle HD screens look off-white. Am curious if that changed in the HdX?

I just compared the Fire 7" HDX to my iPad Retinal Display. With the brightness all the way up, the iPad is by far a whiter screen. The Fire screen has a slight yellow tinge when side by side.

I was looking at a browser page on both, brightness at max.

That said, the Fire HDX has a very nice display.

Viewing my kindle hd alone the screen is uniform with mild bleeding but next to my iphone it is very yellow. Beyond already being tied to the Apple ecosystem the other concern is many websites are formatted for iPads and Safari is a better browser. New complaint - I am not impressed that Amazon is not updating software for a year old tablet. They seem to do so with the eink kindles but have a poor track record on the fire.

Cost and lighter weight are in Amazon's favor. We shall have to see!
