It will be like Netflix for books. Pay a monthly fee and read.

Amazon hasn't commented (AFAIK) on Kindle Unlimited. Apparently, the announcement showed up on the Amazon landing page, but was only spotted later in a web cache.

Now you know as much about it as anyone else in the general public.

Here's the official word from the Kindle Help Forum moderators on Kindle Unlimited:

"From time to time, we test both new and existing features on our website to determine which services would drive customer purchases and satisfaction. We're testing Kindle Unlimited but the service is currently unavailable. If you tried to subscribe, you will not be charged. If you downloaded books, you are able to continue reading them.

During these test periods, certain aspects of our website will function or appear differently to randomly selected customers, or to the same customer using another computer or browser. We don't have any specific information about this service. We're continually fine-tuning our presentation to provide our customers with the greatest value, selection, and information for their online purchasing decisions."

I wonder if they will continue to have the KOLL, since this seems to include most of the same books, and has fewer limitations.

ETA I just followed my link to KOLL books. They no longer say anything about the KOLL; they refer to Unlimited membership. I'll check at lunch to see if I get the usual Borrow button when I use my PW.

Maybe Prime will include Unlimited, too? Hmmn...

Yeah, I left my PW on the table at home; I usually have it with me. So I can't check right now, either.

WAIT! I have my Nearly Extinguished Fire here. Standby...

Okay, at the moment, it appears to be all things to all people. This book The Scent of Murder (Marissa Scott mysteries Book 1) is available for regular sale for $2.99.

From my Kindle, the store shows it for me for sale, Borrow For Free, AND it's marked Kindle Unlimited.

When I read the original post at Gigaom I got the impression that the ebooks plus audio from Audible were both included in the monthly price of $9.99 a month. However, this link you just posted was to sign up for Audible for 3 free audible books and then the usual monthly fee of $14.95 a month. I will be glad when they get through tweaking the program so we will know for sure what we are going to get for the monthly fee of $9.99. I doubt if I will use it because I have plenty of books to read already and real life keeps me too busy to read that many books.

We do know exactly what it comes with. Unlimited books from the KU selection (just over 600k books). Unlimited audiobooks from the subset of KU books that also have Whispersync for Voice capability (just over 2000 books). And 3 free months of a full Audible membership.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=sv_kstore_2?ie=UTF8&docId=1002872331

And specifically about the audiobooks:
"Q: How can I access Kindle Unlimited audiobooks?
A: You can enjoy Kindle Unlimited audiobooks on Kindle Fire HDX tablets, iOS or Android phones and tablets with a free Kindle Reading app and Audible's free listening apps. Look for the Kindle Unlimited 'With Narration' icon on Kindle book pages or browse our catalog of titles with free audiobook companions.

When you click on Read for Free on the Kindle book page of an eligible title, you will automatically get access to both the Kindle book and the audiobook. To access your audiobook on a Kindle Fire tablet, open the book and tap the play button on any page. In your Kindle reading app, open the book and tap the headphones icon. You can also find and download your audiobook in your Audible listening app.

In addition to the thousands of professionally narrated audiobooks included in Kindle Unlimited, subscribers get a complimentary three-month Audible membership, with access to more than 150,000 titles."

The KOLL is still under the "All Categories" drop down menu in the store on my PW.

Holleigh says:
Oh...Thank you for explaining that for me! I already have audible so if I sign up for KU I will get 3 free months then according to the KU plan for books which are not listed in the KU books. Right?

Yankee Fan says:
It would be nice if Amazon clarified the differences between the books you have access to via your prime account and the books you have access to via KU. Since Amazon raised the price of Prime, I assume they won't remove the KOLL as a prime benefit. Clearly one difference is access to Audible but they need delve deeper into these two similar offerings.
