Josh says:
I have a few ful length movies in the mp4 format and I loaded them into the "movies" folder on the kindle but it says it can't play. Is it possible they are too big? Anyone else having this issue?

Are you using the personal video app? I have a ton of MP4s on my Kindle Fire HD and they play fine, although occasionally the app gives me an error message (but continues to play).

Josh says:
Yes I am. I can see the files and when I tap them I get the error message (which I didn't write down). Does it make a difference if you use the "Video" vs. "Movies" folders?

Mine are in the "movies" folder (I don't know if that makes any difference), and average about 1GB in size.

Do you have ES FIle Explorer installed? If not, try it. It has a built in video player as well. You can just open the folder and tap on your video to play it (it will give you the option to choose which player to use).

ES File Explorer File Manager

Josh says:
The movie was about 4 GB, I guess that seems pretty big. I'll try again but maybe I need to find smaller movie files...?

Try the player on the ES File Explorer first, but yeah, those are pretty big files.

"kacey says:

I wasn't able to figure why the large file wasn't playing but I have been able to watch smaller mp4's after cut/pasting into the movies folder and using the default personal video app.

By the way, does anyone know of a way to view the titles of shows when viewed in the personal video app? All I can see is a screen shot and it makes it hard to tell what is what.

Jazzy_Jeff says:
It is because 4GB is the max file size that Android will read. There really is not reason to use movie files that big on a portable device anyway. Most of the movies files I have are under 1GB each and they look fine.

I have the same problem with mp4 files. I can play them on my Samsung Galaxy S3 and on my PC, but not on the Kindle Fire HD. I put them in the "Movies" folder too.

Josh says:
I have some mp4 that won't play and some that will, I am guessing that there is something in the metadata. I think I might try and re-c convert them and see.

Everything works on everything but my Kindle Fire HD. Got it for Christmas yesterday. 1 Gig file of The Bourne Legacy. Got the digital copy, converted it to MP4. Dragged and dropped to video folder. Still won't work. Any advice???

Ericgon says:
Everyone! I found the answer! You have to go into your apps folder and look in an app called "personal videos" I can't believe I didn't see it before!

The only way I managed to get mp4 files to work was to convert them using DVD Fab. Google it and purchase a copy of their Video Converter (you can trial it first). They have a special video profile for the Kindle.

I used DVD Fab and still couldn't get it to work. Is there a size limit for the kindle?

still cant get all mp4 videos to play on Kindle Fire HD 8.9'. and they are all less than 900mb and are not DRM protected....

okay for people still having problems with mp4 playing on kindle fire/kindle fire HD go to the amazon appstore and download moboplayer this is playing all my video files now-!!!

Paul Tinsley says:
I used the profile called "kindlefire.mp4.h264.aac" within DVDFab to get a standard .mp4 file to convert over to a format that the Kindle Fire HD would play. I used the Video Converter software within DVDFab.

My MP4 converted from DVD still won't play after downloading moboplayer. I had used Freemake converter to convert from DVD to MP4.

It still wouldn't play under "personal videos".
What's strange is my home movies that I converted to MP4 work fine.

I'm ready to give up!

CK - Has you MP4 played successfully on any other device?
