I bought Jordan Ellenberg's new book, How Not to Be Wrong, for my Kindle. I had started reading the book in print form from my local library, but wanted to own the book, so purchased the Kindle edition. The book is replete with asterisked, unnumbered footnotes that appear at the bootom of the page. Of course, the footnotes can only be read on Kindle by going to the end of the book, under Notes, which are keyed only to Chapter Headings, and since there are no footnote numbers, it is extremelhy difficult and discouraging to keep flipping back and forth from the text to the Notes. The author's footnotes add substantially to the text. This book should never have been published on Kindle, without at leaset a warning.

You should review the book on its product page and say as much.

Actually the title of your post is incorrect and misleading. There are lots of Kindle books that handle footnotes just fine. You've provided one example that doesn't, that doesn't justify the broad brush you've painted all books with footnotes with.

I have a PaperWhite and Ipad. On both I can touch the footnote number and it takes me to the page with the footnote. When i'm finished with the footnote, I hit the back symbol in the menu and I return to page I'm reading.

He said there are no numbers on these footnotes.

Kindle handles footnotes just fine. Sounds like the publisher did a bad job with the formatting.

Asterisks would work fine, if they were hyperlinked properly.

This would be a fault of the author / formatter / editor / publisher...not of Kindle / Amazon.

i'd suggest you call kindle customer service if the footnotes are not working on a particular book. Report the book title, publisher, and location numbar(s) of the error(s). Amazon will contact the publisher and notify you if/when the problem is resolved.

Thank you for the suggestion. With all footnotes being asterisked and unnumbered, it may be that the problem cannot be corrected, without republication with numbered footnotes.
