I'm interested in knowing if any of you guys have kept track of the battery life on your HDX. A couple of times I've checked out the percentage lost in an hour's time. I'm consistently losing only 10% battery life during active, mixed use (By "mixed," I mean some music, some web surfing, some other general app use). That means I am indeed getting every bit of 10 hours of ACTIVE use....even when that use includes some media content.

How on Earth this "does not add to the discussion" !?

The poster *started* the discussion, and the topic is relevant for the forum it is in. What's the matter with you downvote fairies!?

I'm disappointed in battery life. If I leave it sitting on my nightstand with the cover closed, it's completely dead by the second day. The only thing running is wireless. Not sure if it is faulty or just poor design. My iPad mini and air lose maybe 5% of the battery when just sitting there over night.

You probably have an app using the wifi in the background or the display is not getting shut off by the cover. I'm just curious but why not plug it in if it's sitting there in the house by your night stand?

Richard, do you have a 7" or the 8.9" (I don't know when or if the 8.9s have been shipped)? I had a 7" HD for a couple of weeks and only got 4 hours battery time, so I returned it. I bought a 7" HDX this week and I'm hoping for 10 hours of mixed use.

Mama24Kiddos says:
I don't think anyone has had an 8.9" over night yet. They shipped yesterday some very lucky people may have received them today. The official release date is tomorrow.

Thanks. I was hoping he had the 7" so I might be getting the 10 hour battery life on mine, too.

I've seen very mixed reviews on the battery life some people say they easily get 10 hours of "mixed us" others say it's less than 6. I think some of it depends on how mixed the use is ( is it mostly videos and high end games) and how bright the brightness is set to.

I haven't measured the battery life on my HDX but it's much better than my Original Fire. I've used it quite a lot today w/ WiFi on and I'm now at 76%.

The brightness has a huge impact, in my experience. Keeping it turned down low (which I can easily do indoors) makes the battery charge last much longer.

Sometime my cell phone does that...justgoes completely dead at night. I found out that it's because of the cell towers here...always searching for a better signal. I just startedpowering it down at night, worked great. I'd say if nothing else just turn the kindle off at night. We charge ours when we go to bed so we have a full charge in the morning

Just received my 8.9. Can I download and watch movies. Will monitor battery life

I have a HDX 7 LTE. The battery life is pretty bad. I mainly use it (video and news) during train ride, about 50 minutes one way, then only check emails during work hours. I need to charge it every night.

I wonder if I got a lemon and should exchange it. The battery came in with 0% charge when I opened the package, if that was any indication of bad battery?

I've been keeping track of the battery life on my 7" HDX and my old Fire HD 7"
HDX
Tues, 12/10, at 4:44 am it was 100%
Wed, 12/11 at 8:45 pm it was 11%
It's been used less than 1/2 hour during that time.

My 7" Fire HD (1st gen)
Tues, 12/10, 4:44 am 98-100%
Wed, 12/11 8:53 pm 88%
Used about 15 minutes during this time.

Something is wrong with the HDX batteries...that's what I think

Nah...some app is running in the background...load a battery use monitor, and/or a data use monitor to see what is running hard while the device is asleep. I have no suggestions of which to use, there are many around and I only load one if/when I have a problem, not necessarily even using the same across the few times I have done so over the years.

Good luck...its not always easy to track down or solve, depending if it is an app you added with updates and notifications (like a weather app) or some misbehaving system app.

Also, have you rebooted the device recently...if not, do so and try again.

Thanks for the info. I didn't do a reboot...just a shut down. I do have a weather app on the HDX that I don't use on the HD. I'll try your suggestions.

Good luck...its no fun, I know...went through it on both my old Galaxy Tab 10.1 a couple years ago, then on my Galaxy Nexus phone.

A weather app was one, just updating every 6 minutes, and their servers stunk, it would grind for minutes sometimes, just trying to get updates even when running the app awake. The other was a game that once run would reset my wifi sleep mode to "always on," even when the screen was off and the device supposed to remain dormant, never then allowing a true sleep mode.

Make sure Bluetooth is turned off if you are not using it.

I'm also experiencing bad battery life with my 7" Kindle Fire HDX. I notice that the battery drained 3% within 1 hr while in sleep mode(I enabled airplane mode). If I'm reading various articles from the Flipboard app or browsing the internet, the battery seems to drain faster than I expect. I installed an app to kill any background activities and haven't notice any difference either.

When I first charged my Kindle(waited till the battery was down to 5%), It took 8+ hours to charge. The second time that i charged the Kindle, It wouldn't charge to 100%. It just lingered at 70% after 8+ hours of charging. On the third attempt, the Kindle finally charged to 100% in 5 hours or so.

I have updated the OS and restored the device back to factory settings and haven't notice a difference in the battery life. This is my first Kindle and I'm disappointed on how poor the the battery life has been.

At this rate, looks like that I'll have to charge the Kindle every night.

I agree. While I have not done a "scientific study", I do notice that my HDX loses battery at a much faster rate than my 1st gen Fire. My son uses my 1st gen now, mostly for gaming, and it seems that it goes for days, when I read mostly with the HDX, and it doesn't last more than 3 days! And at times, it will not charge past 76%, even when it's plugged in for 6+ hours!

I've been away from home quite a bit & haven't been recording the battery life. Yesterday I turned off Wi-Fi & didn't use my HDX for 24 hours....in that time the battery went from 100% to 87%. I don't understand how a new battery can lose power when it's not being used. In the next few days, I'm going to record battery usage again.

I've read other posts where people are having trouble charging their HDX batteries to 100%. Some of them discovered that their rooms are too cold. If I remember correctly, most of them mentioned a temperature in the 50-60 F range. One fella put a heating pad on his Fire & it charged to 100%; another charged his HDX in a warmer room.

Denis Powell says:
If you leave your HDX in sleep mode some apps may continue to work in the background. Even with WiFi off I think the email app may still try to connect periodically. I don't use an email app at all and my HDX will hold a charge very well in sleep mode.
