I'm trying to decide between getting the Kindle Fire HDX (7") or the Kindle Fire HD (8.9, not the 8.9 HDX). I was hoping to get some feedback on which one would be better as I would like to stay in $250 range. It'll be used mainly for reading, internet surfing, not so much for gaming; maybe a TV show or movie once in a while. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the 7" is lighter (better when reading in bed) the only good thing about the 8.9" is that it has a rear facing camera, so you can take pics. The 7" allows u to take pics with the front facing camera but this means that the user is always in the pic. Other than that it is perfect for skype videochats. It also has the mirror function to send your 7" screen to your TV screen (if u don't have a smart TV, buy a miracast accessory on amazon)

The OP was specifically asking about the regular Kindle Fire 8.9 HD, not the HDX model. The regular Kindle Fire 8.9 HD does NOT have a rear-facing camera, only a front-facing camera.

It sounds like the 7" will be a better fit for you because it will be lighter and more portable. Unless you are going to watch a lot of movies/videos, the 7" will work.

If you are a Prime member, you get the ability to download certain videos to watch when you are offline. I think that is a perk for the HDX model that you wouldn't get with the HD at this time.

However, this close to Black Friday, you may want to wait and see what Amazon offers up for a cyber sale.

While I don't have a 7" HDX, I did have the 7" Kindle Fire, and I found it a bit too small of a screen for any real internet surfing, but it's small size makes it great for reading on the go. I eventually switched to the KF HD 8.9, which is much better for web surfing and for watching videos, and is still a great reader. I am sure someone who does have the new 7" HDX can give you their experiences.

I have a 7 inch Fire HD and have loved it but would like a bigger screen. The prices on the 8.9 inch HD model are attractive and I am seriously considering getting it. A treat for myself that won't break the bank right before the holidays.

I purchased the HDX 7 but it was terrible for reading books. So I purchased a Paperwhite for reading books and the HD 8.9 for videos and magazines. Both work very nicely. But I'm still thinking of upgrading the HD for the 8.9 HDX. Yes it costs more, but (I deserve it!) and it has a better screen, sound, rear facing camera and you can download prime videos (can't do that on the HD 8.9)
Will wait for more customer reviews of the 8.9 HDX before making a decision.

Does the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 allow you to take video like the IPADs do, not just watch them?

According to the product page for the HDX 8.9, there is both a front and rear facing camera.

I can't tell you if the camera works "like the iPads do". You should probably spend some time reading the product page to see if the HDX 8.9 does what you want.

I found 7" screen tablets, Fire included, a bit to small especially for movies but if you get a 7' HDX then miracast could solve the 'to small a screen' video/movie viewing problem quite well. The miracast dongle needed for the TV/Monitor is in the 50 dollar range although some TV's have that capability built in.

The HDX in 8.9" sits up well using the Origami Cover. I do all my reading with my Fire is propped up in my lap for many hours a day.

I had the same problem. I ended up getting the fire hd 8.9 and am very happy with it.
The larger sceen is to my older eyes much easer to read. Also if plan to be on the
Web the larger sceen is much better at showing detail even with its slightly lower

I compared the Kindle HDX and HD before I bought the item for kids Christmas gift. I researched the HDX and found there was a few issues. Don't know if it's true, but bought the HD and kids are very happy with it and it's much cheaper. Here you can find the Kindle fire HD.
