Berta - You need to immediately deregister it to prevent purchases on your account. Click on http://amazon.com/manageyourkindle and then Manage Your Devices. That way no one can buy anything on your account. Write down your serial number before deregistering so that you have it for a police report or insurance purposes.

Then contact customer service ASAP. They can blacklist it so that no one else can register it to their account. If it's already been re-registered to someone else before you contact them they can't do anything. There is no way to track them.

TO CONTACT KINDLE CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Click on this link and fill in the information. https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/contact-us/kindle-help.html/?nodeId=200127470
You may have to sign in. I would use the PHONE or CHAT options.
Do NOT use e-Mail.
CALL ME under the PHONE tab is great if available.
They will call you within minutes.

You may also want to make sure that you cancel any active subscriptions through http://amazon.com/manageyourkindle. Canceling the subscription will ensure that you are no longer billed; you'll also receive a pro-rated refund for remaining issues you already paid for. You always have the option of subscribing at a later date.

I just found it and thank you so much for all the responses. I am going to save your responses in the event I may need it. It was in my purse but couldn't feel it because I had taken the protective cover off of it since I wasn't going to use it anytime soon ..... to put it on my new asu memo pad/android to protect it. The kindle suddenly got shorter and sunk deep into my purse (usually I can feel it right away with the cover on). Thanks everyone. xoxo

You must have a big purse Berta. Mine is so big my husband tells me I could loose a small town inside of it. I am always getting in a panic thinking I have lost something but there it is...in the bottom of the black hole. Doesn't matter though, I will never give up my big bags. Glad you found it..have a wonderful evening.

lol, I do have big purses Lillian Leah but this one happen to be in a small one, just didn't expect it to be so small out of its protective cover. Thanks for the thoughts, it made me laugh. xoxo

I would not carry a Kindle around loose in a purse without a protective cover. Kindle screens are really fragile.

J. Penrose says:
Don't forget to set a PIN on the screen saver. Keeps the finder from getting in at all without a lot of trial and error and will serve as definitive proof if you find someone holding yours and they claim it is theirs. Hard to convince a cop you own something if you can't unlock it and the other person readily can.

On the Kindles I've seen, there is a location to add in personal information about yourself just in case the Kindle disappears and a kind Kindle owner or other clever person wants to notify you.
