the home button on my kindle only takes me to the kindle store home screen. I can't get to the local device home. Any suggestions?

Jim, try a reset: hold the power switch to the right for 30 seconds (it will seem like forever) and then wait. You should get a progress bar as it resets itself.

Hi Jim

With a good charge on the Kindle (charge for an hour if not sure), and the K unplugged:
Hold the power switch over 30 full seconds; *time it*. Release and TOUCH NOTHING ELSE while the system reloads (boy on hill with progress bars) and the homescreen comes back, first empty (don't panic) then repopulates with your books. If everything doesn't come back, turn on wireless and Menu/Sync&Check, but mine have always come back. Then if you have a K3 (and I have only heard of this happening on the K3), go Menu/Settings, NextPage to find where you set the time if necessary. Setting the time will fix the Date too, somehow.

Honestly, it sounds like your ALT key is stuck.

Pressing the Home button *and* the ALT key is a built-in shortcut that will automatically take you to the Kindle Store front. So if your ALT key is stuck down, then pressing the Home button completes that magic two-part combination.

My Kindle was doing the same exact thing today. I performed the Reset instructions listed above by Dianne Gorman and krystalspin and it came back working normally. Weird.

Oh, thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was having this problem with my Kindle (gen 1 keyboard), and this fixed it right up. I had tried everything I could think of, but did not know about the 30+ second reboot. I was just about give up and look for a new unit, but now I don't have to!

Thanks again!

My home button has been taking me to the store, so my kindle has been unusable for over a year. I have reset it multiple times, but it didn't do a thing.

Over a year, and you haven't contacted customer service?

Incredible! If it had not already, for sure you are now beyond your warranty.

Check the alt key tip above - it just solved my issue. Press Home button and alt key at the same time

I was having this same problem this evening after my wife dropped my Kindle last night and "... may have hit a key". Pressing the "home" key only took me to the Amazon Store. By pressing the Alt+Home combination, then Back, then Home this weird stuck Alt situation seems to have been solved. No reset required.

Glad I found this post.
