Is this possible? I have the Kindle paperwhite latest edition.

Is there a way to bookmark the maps so it's easy to go back to them for reference instead of using the scroll to get to the maps? Thanks

Sure, just bookmark it, then use GO TO. Remember to bookmark your current location too so you can get back to it.

So the quickest way is to bookmark my location, then go to map, then bookmark back to where I was then cancel the bookmark on the page I currently am?

You need to set a bookmark on the map. Then, whenever you're reading and want to go to the map, set a bookmark where you are, then use "go to" and select the map bookmark, then to go back to your place use "go to" and select your current place bookmark. Subsequently deleting your current place bookmark before you read on will avoid having a whole bunch of outdated "current place" bookmarks stored.

You don't have to set a bookmark where you're reading. Just use the back arrow to get back after you're done looking at the map.

That's ok too, provided you don't get sidetracked somewhere else along the way. I've been caught before :-)
