January 26, 1988 ~ The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Phantom of the Opera," the longest-running show in Broadway history, opened at the Majestic Theater in New York.

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart with additions from Richard Stilgoe. Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe also wrote the musical's book together. Based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux, its central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius.

The musical opened in London's West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford (in the title role) won the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical. It is the longest running show in Broadway history by a wide margin, and celebrated its 10,000th Broadway performance on 11 February 2012, the first production ever to do so. It is the second longest-running West End musical, and the third longest-running West End show overall.

With total estimated worldwide gross receipts of over $5.6 billion (the highest in history) and total Broadway gross of US$845 million (surpassed only by The Lion King), Phantom is the most financially successful entertainment event to date. By 2011 it had been seen by over 130 million people in 145 cities in 27 countries, and continues to play in both London and New York.

The Majestic Theatre is a Broadway theatre located at 245 West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan. It is one of the largest Broadway theatres with 1,645 seats, and traditionally has been used as a venue for major musical theatre productions. Among the notable shows that have premiered at the Majestic are Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The Music Man (1957), Camelot (1960), A Little Night Music (1973), and The Wiz (1975). It was also the second home of 42nd Street and the third home of 1776. The theatre has housed The Phantom of the Opera since it opened on January 26, 1988. With a record-breaking 10,210 performances to date, it is currently the longest-running production in Broadway history.

The Chanins commissioned Herbert Krapp to design the theatre complex in what he called a "modern Spanish" style, complete with terra-cotta base and Spanish brick-wall ornamentation, and arched windows. The Majestic's exterior also includes a stylized Palladian motif above the entrance. The interior features the Adam-style detailing common in many Shubert houses. Decades before the current vogue for stadium seating in movie theaters, Krapp had conceived of a similar concept for the theatre's orchestra. With its steep rake, it offers ideal sight lines for audience members. Another forward-thinking aspect of the design was the creation of a single large balcony rather than two smaller ones-today's producers are hesitant to book two-balcony houses because second-balcony seating is less desirable to modern audiences.

Look! You want to see? See! Feast your eyes, glut your soul on my cursed ugliness! Look at Erik's face! Now you know the face of the voice! You were not content to hear me, eh? You wanted to know what I looked like? Oh, you women are so inquisitive! Well, are you satisfied? I'm a good-looking fellow, eh? When a woman has seen me, as you have, she belongs to me. She loves me forever! I am a kind of Don Juan, you know! Look at me! I am Don Juan Triumphant!

"Is the mask magic?" he demanded with sudden, passionate interest.
"Yes." I bowed my head, so that our eyes no longer met. "I made it magic to keep you safe. The mask is your friend, Erik. As long as you wear it, no mirror can ever show you the face again."
He was silent then and when I showed him the new mask he accepted it without question and put it on hastily with his clumsy, bandaged fingers. But when I stood up to go, he reacted with panic and clutched at my gown.
"Don't go! Don't leave me here in the dark."
"You are not in the dark," I said patiently. "Look, I have left the candle ..."
But I knew, as I looked at him, that it would have made no difference if I had left him fifty candles. The darkness he feared was in his own mind and there was no light in the universe powerful enough to take that darkness from him.
With a sigh of resignation I sat back on the bed and began to sing softly; and before I had finished the first verse, he was asleep.
The bandages on his hands and wrists showed white and eerie in the candle-light, as I eased my skirts from his grasp.
I knew that Marie was right.
Physically and mentally, I had scarred him for life."
― Susan Kay, Phantom

Sword of the Gods: The Chosen One (Sword of the Gods Saga)

At the dawn of time, two ancient adversaries clashed over control of Earth. One man rose to stand at humanity's side. A soldier whose name we still remember today...

Mikhail awakens, mortally wounded, in his crashed ship. The young woman who saves his life has abilities which seem familiar, but with no memory of his past, he can't remember why! With his ship destroyed and a shattered wing, he has no choice but to integrate into her village, a task made difficult by her jilted lover.

Ninsianna's people have prophecies of a winged champion, a Sword of the Gods who will raise armies from the dust and defend her people against an Evil One. Mikhail insists he is no demi-god, but her dark premonitions and his uncanny ability to kill say otherwise. Even without the technology destroyed along with his ship, the sword he carries is a weapon of mass destruction to a people who still throw sticks and stones. When young women start to disappear, Mikhail must organize her people to fight back against an enemy who remains unseen.

Evil whispers to a sullen Prince. A dying species seeks to avoid extinction. Two emperors, entrenched in their ancient ideologies, cannot see the larger threat. As intrigues roil the heavens, a tiny Mesopotamian town becomes ground-zero for this fantasy fiction retelling of mankind's most epic story about the battle between good and evil ... the clash of empires and ideologies ... and the greatest superhero to ever walk the Earth. The Archangel Mikhail.

Hi KayKay

I saw the Phantom of the Opera in New York City several years ago. A High School Band field trip with my kids. It was a great show!

I am off to bed now. See everyone tomorrow.

I'm off to bed too. But I will be dreaming of Phantom. May have to watch the movie version tomorrow. Have seen both stage & movie productions & loved both.

Have only seen stage version of Les Misérables so don't know how movie version compares. But for the music I think my favorites are Phantom & Cats.

What a wonderful start you prepared for us all, great artwork and fabulous information about both the theatre, so interesting and Phantom, which I have never seen, so I know that I have an awesome experience ahead of me at some time.
Hope you sleep well and see you when you re-emerge

I too have an excel sheet to keep track of my ebook purchases and as you said on the sat. thread does take additional time to maintain but is so worth it, I have mine highlight the author name when repeated, very helpful. and luckily for me decided to add a cell with the ASIN number when I started the sheet, never realising that I would ever find it so useful LOL and I also have a cell where I write additional info - like also has another cover/title/and now will add or ASIN !!
Thanks for your feedback on this, perhaps I will contact CS, but I think if the 'new' version of the book becomes free I will 1-click it.
I am wondering what will happen if I get a new Kindle or get a new pc and download K4PC again whether those items I have bought will download, (the ones that now show as Unavailable on my purchased list)

Not sure if the above actually makes sense to anyone else, it is so clear in my head but here ??!!??

Now I am not talking to myself - wondered where you were, the night crew seems to have evaporated a bit lately, and I slept in so was late in arriving.

I liked the "I know"part of it..
I've been resting, and watching Deadwood..
I started to read Not Free Still Life: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel, but didn't get very far when I decided that I needed a break from reading.. I have been reading a lot since Thanksgiving.. All of those Christmas books plus
this is #9 since Jan. 1st.

I really don't know how you read so much in so little time, I would really have a problem remembering all of those characters that spend time with you.
Deadwood is a series we have not had over here (or if we have then I have not seen it), you must be almost at the end by now, hope that you have been enjoying it.
How is your mother doing ?

I haven't talked to mom for a few days.. When she is here and my sister
calls she always makes some comment about must be your sister and I don't want her to be saying that to her about me.. I don't want to be a pest..

A blonde was visiting Washington, DC for the first time. She wanted to see the Capital building. Unfortunately, she couldn't find it, so she asked a police officer for directions - "Excuse me, officer, how do I get to the Capital building?"

The officer replied, "Wait here at this bus stop for the number 54 bus. It'll take you right there." She thanked the officer and he drives off.

Three hours later the police officer returned to the same area and, sure enough, the blonde is still waiting at the same bus stop.

The officer got out of his car and said, "Excuse me, but to get to the Capital building, I said to wait here for the number 54 bus and that was three hours ago! Why are you still waiting?"

The blonde replied, "Don't worry, officer, it won't be long now... The 45th bus just went by!"
