You can if you can get Google Play Store installed on your Kindle. I installed the Google Play Store app on my KF HD 8.9 without rooting it, but it doesn't work -- there's something missing.

Same here. None of the Google Play family of apps work in the cloud because it is looking for your Google account on your device - and the Kindle Fires only register your Amazon account, not your Google account.

Google Play won't work without rooting. It requires the Google Services API, which can only be installed in a locked system directory. The same is true of any Google app that requires Google identity service.

It's a whole lot easier to just download the app to an android device and then, using your PC as the middle man, transfer the backed-up apk file to the Kindle Fire. I have only ran into a couple of apps in which this method did not work. It should be noted that it WILL NOT work on any paid apps. That's kind of a given.

You can look up how to do this through Google.

PS56k says:
That is pretty much my personal stumbling block for a Fire -
I need/want my usual financial apps... Chase, Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, etc...
Along with Google Maps, WGN (Chicago) weather, and a few others.

I actually have a Nook Color that is running the SDcard which boots into full Android.... either Android For Nook (AFN) or Nook to Android (N2A) - have both cards.

So, I have my Android reading apps - Kindle, Nook, Overdrive, etc
The "walled garden" of video content & kids games just isn't my choice.

BTW - also have a iPad mini and retired a Kindle orig, Kindle keyboard.
