Kindle turns off/won't charge when plugged

Is it a Fire gen 1? Is the charging port loose?

Are you sure it's the right charger? I know a lot of chargers are interchangeable, but I have this one cell phone charger at work that if I plug the Fire into it, I can't operate the Fire.

Other chargers, I can charge it while operating it, but not that *one* charger. Are you using a charger specifically for the Fire?

The 1st gens did have a batch of loosening ports, as well.

It does charge it with no problem, it just won't let me turn it on while it is plugged in. I have to unplug it and turn it on and then plug it back in after I have opened the book (or app) I am reading.

I would try contacting customer service. It might be a defective charger or a defective Fire. Either way they should be able to help you figure out what was wrong and whether it could be fixed or should be replaced.
