Hi all, I can't decide which to get and keep. Money wise I can afford both but since I have other Tablets i.e. iPad's, Nexus 7 I appreciate different sizes in tablets.

First and foremost to me the Kindle Fire HD is ALL about the integration of the Amazon ecosystem. I'm also a Prime member and will renew again for all the media content.

I have owned the KF-HD 7" but returned it due to hardware issues so i'm starting over.

What I like about the 7" KF-HD:

1) Portability (small and light enough to carry in one hand)

What I don't like about the 7" KF-HD:

1) Poor browsing experience
2) Smallish screen to view media content

a) So how much bigger is the 8.9" vs the 7"?
b) Is it small and light enough for portability?
c) Do videos look better on one of the formats?

TIA for your thoughts and suggestions :)

I don't have my 8.9 yet, but I have cover already. I compared cover to my first gen fire and it seemed a lot bigger to me. my first gen in cover seemed to fit in the size of the screen for the 8.9. That being said, it still seems a nice size to carry around vs say a 10in tablet. Sorry cant tell about how video's look. But from reviews I hear the screen is same for both hd 7in and 8.9in. hope that helps.

Brought daughter a new 7 for thanksgiving an have my new 8.9 4g here. Size an weight are the issues. Performance differences are neglible. Female opinion is that 7 is better because it fits in purse. Significantly easier to let someone else see what is on the screen in the 8.9. If you read yourself to sleep the "nose bang" effect is more on the 8.9.

The 7 got an update the 8.9 needs - coming soon I'm sure.

I've used both the Fire HD 7" and the 8.9. Here is some feedback to your questions:

a) So how much bigger is the 8.9" vs the 7"?
* The 8.9 HxW is not quite as big as a full-size iPad.
* You might want to check out the 8.9 size in person at Best Buy, Staples, etc.

b) Is it small and light enough for portability?
* This is a tough question to answer because it varies by person.
* For me, the larger screen makes the 8.9 a better choice even though it's not quite as small and pocketable as the 7".

c) Do videos look better on one of the formats?
* This is what swayed me to the 8.9".
* Videos look great on both but a bit better on the 8.9, perhaps because video displays at 1080p on the 8.9 but is limited to 750p on the 7". It's close though... videos look really good on both.

A nice bonus on the 8.9: When in landscape mode, the Kindle app has a setting to allow you to view books in "Two column" view (similar to the way you view two pages at a time in a "real" book) or as a single column. I don't recall this setting being available on the 7".

i bought my mom an 8.9 and side by side, the videos looked sharper on the smaller screen. (both were on full brightness) The 7 seemed to have a bit better sound too I like the 7 strictly for the portability but the 8.9 is still mighty nice. Not horribly big, still pretty portable. photo viewing was incredible.

The 8.9 is very nice. Not as easy to hold in one hand, but its much better for internet reading and videos. Silk seems to still have crashing issues - its improved a bit with the unannounced update earlier this week, but I still get "tab not responding" messages. I haven't tried turning off acceleration or anything like that.

Thanks for the info. So the 8.9" model has browser issues? Have you tried disabling JavaScript or acceleration?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 22, 2012, 12:00:54 PM PST
No, I haven't tried debugging. The problem is "tab not responding" errors. I think its just a timing issue where the error pops up it the screen doesn't load in a certain amount of time. It doesn't happen all the time, but it can get annoying. You just have to click reload and it usually will then load the screen. It definitely is better IMHO since the update.

Thanks for the "Female opinion". I never considered the need to fit it in a purse. It seems us males want to go "big". Ill get her the 7" fire.

I looked at both in Best Buy last night. The 8.9 reminded me a lot of ipad size, although it is a little smaller.

I've had an Ipad and used it for reading before Kindle supported library books. I really did NOT like it, mostly because of the size. It's a lot harder to hold and read in bed, and too big for my purse. For me, the 7" is better.

Well since others are commenting on the thread I started i'll add to it as an update. I went ahead and purchased the 8.9 as a compliment to the 7" HD I purchased earlier. As jarand mentioned the 8.9 feels similar to the iPad which I also own. But the increase in size has added other issues harware wise.

It's not a one handed device like the Nexus 7 or KF-HD 7". The browser is crap i.e. unresponsive tap to zoom and I don't even have the unresponsive Silk tabs others are complaining about. My other problem is the scaling of the display because of the higher resolution.

It's frustrating to use the 8.9 on Amazon's site. I have to ZOOM WAY IN, in order to sign in. If not my touch is interpreted as me wanting to signup for a new account. There are other times that I find touching a link gets me something else until I ZOOM WAY IN again.

The problem isn't as bad when using the Dolphin browser but it still happens although not as frequent. When I compare the 8.9 HD to my iPad it gets even more frustrating as I know how smooth it is when using an iPad.

I only got the 8.9 HD because i'm an Amazon junkie and love Amazon Prime. I'm seriously leaning on returning it and sticking with the 7" HD.

I have bought supported and owned maybe 10 -12 of these things including the 8.9 4g and the 7 hd. The 7 is better for reading imho. lighter makes a big difference at night in bed. ESPECIALLY when you doze off and it hits you in the nose. The 8.9 4g is due to get its first update soon (I believe) got some bugs to get worked out. Once that happens, I believe it will be the better device software wise.

BTW I have not had the silk issue for 24 hours - maybe it was server side.

Wifi and startup is much much much better on my 8.9 4g then the original fire. I wish I could go directly to bookmarks and bypass that starter page but it is not a big problem. Some apps don't transition well/at all to 8.9.

I would say go with the 8.9 unless you doze off reading a lot. GET A MAGNETIC COVER.

I purchased the 8.9 for reading and like the poster said I find the 7" is better and more comfortable for reading. I also don't like the 8.9 for web browsing.

What don't you like about the 8.9" for web browsing? Seems the higher resolution would be better Rodster360

The zooming is almost nonexistent on the 8.9 KF-HD. I own an iPad 3 and zooming into text is really well done. The iPad also has consistent scaling so if you touch something on the screen whether you are zoomed in or not there's a 99.99% chance the iPad will get it right.

Not so with the 8.9 KF. It's better if you use the Dolphin browser but it still has it's share of scaling problems. Also the text is really small. I own an iPad 3 and the text scaling is just spot on.

Where the 8.9 really shines is watching videos or movies and reading BOOKS. The 8.9 is just PERFECT for reading in portrait mode although it's slightly heavier. The new color background for reading is just unbelievable.

Posted on Dec 10, 2012, 7:40:52 PM PST
new color background? Is it not avail on the 7" HD?

do you have the 7" old style, or the 7" HD?

Do you still have both devices? Would you be so kind to pull up avsforum.com or hardforum.com on both 7" and 8.9" and see if they show forum text differently? I'm curious if their is more info easily seen on the 8.9's higher resolution - or if the safari browser just scales them to look the same?

Also is e-mail reading better on the 8.9 or 7 -- or identical?

Thanks for the quick response!

The new color background for reading is also available for the 7" HD. I have the 7" HD and I returned the 8.9 because it had a few issues. I just ordered the 8.9 with the $50 off promo.

Like I mentioned earlier the tap to zoom into text is better and more responsive on the 7" HD. The text looks very sharp on the 8.9 but the scaling is off as if the text needs to be a little bigger which causes tap errors i.e. you tap a link and nothing happens or you get the next closest choice.

You will see more info especially in portrait mode on the 8.9" HD. The iPad scales text much better which is why the iPad 1/2/3/4 and mini all use a 4:3 aspect ratio. The KF-HD 7 and 8.9" both use 16:10.

To me you can't beat the current promo. You can get an 8.9" 16GB for the same price as the 32GB 7" HD. And if all your doing with it is web browsing and streaming the 16GB is an overkill.

Rodster says:
One way around the tap to zoom is the finger pinch and spread. You can spread the text by spreading your 2 fingers which will zoom in the area. I'm just used to tapping to zoom because the iPad does it so well. Tough habit to break I guess. :)

So now that it's March 1 2013 do you still like the 8.9. I am waiting for some rewards point to come in in the form of Amazon gift cards. I am ready for a Kindle Fire HD. I have played with the iPad 3 here in my office and though I like it I believe I'll be happier with the Kindle Fire. I had one of the original Kindles and I wore it out!!! So now I have the Kindle 2 and want a KFHD but keep searching for the reviews and opinions. This discussion was very helpful. I am not one to keep music on it and very few if any movies, especially if I can stream them. Are you happy with the 8.9. I saw where you returned it but then bought again with the 50.00 promo.

Can one change the resolution on these devices? I have vision problems, even with glasses. I was thinking the 8.9 may be better for my problem, but maybe not.

I hate to ask, but what is the "nose bang effect"? Thank you all for the great posts, it really does help a lot! Cheers to the house!
