i need to know how to unfreeze my kindle fire screen

Try rebooting it. Hold in the power button for 20 seconds (count them). It should then reboot. Don't do this while it's plugged in.

I have a similar problem. My screen won't rotate and is stuck horizontal (I want vertical). Thoughts>

Bella, click on the Settings (little gear)
A pop-up menu will appear with an option at the left to Unlock/Lock. This refers to the screen rotation. Press it and you will be good to go.

My Kindle fire freeze's all the time on scrolling the home screen
all i do is tap on the apps tab. and then come back to home screen
i think it's a bug with icon caching.

Just adding my voice to others, regarding the freezing screen problem with the Kindle Fire I received as a gift.
The unit worked fine, when first taken from the box. I made it through the registration process, and the "screen freeze" problem began shortly thereafter.

I tried the reboot process, to no avail - by the way, the shut-down time seems to be closer to about 12 seconds for me, rather than the 20 seconds cited in the instructions; I've held the button for 20 seconds anyway, to see if something else happens after the shut-down at the ~12sec point, but no additional activity appeared to take place.

I also spoke with Customer Service, but all the customer service rep could do was walk me through what I had already tried, i.e., let the unit charge for 30 minutes, then try the reboot again. It did not solve the problem.

My next action will be to return this to a Target store (where my family purchased it for me) for an exchange, but right now the nearby stores are out of stock on the Kindle Fire. I'll check with them again in a couple days, to see if they restocked.

I'm having the same problems (freezing, screen not rotating, etc). I've unlocked my KF and rebooted it, and still no help. Any further ideas? The app I'm having the most trouble with is Hulu, it keeps playing upside down...

I had that problem for a day and it went away on it's own before I could research it.

Click settings (the little gear icon at the top) and when the settings come down, the first one should say "locked" or "unlocked". If it's locked, touch it and it'll turn to unlock. Hope this helps!

Ah oh ... reading all these posts on screen freeze, as mine did this for the 1st time last-night. It was a 2011 Christmas present. I couldn't tap on anything to make anything work at all! I couldn't turn it off, rotate it or nothing. Decided to hook it up to my PC to look for any files that shouldn't be on it ... and my PC didn't even recognize that it was in the F-Drive. Finally, I went to Amazon, seen to hold the off/on button in for over 20-seconds. This finally turned it off and when I turned it back on, my PC recognized it in the F-drive. There's obviously a glitch of some sort going on with the Kindles. It's like "bandwidth," "pop-ups," too much info and/or pictures are creating a problem with it. Hopefully, Amazon will correct this problem ... or, I will also be returning my Kindle Fire for a full refund and will go with "Nook" ... not as fancy, but certainly not as many problems.

The Fire is no different than a laptop/computer that will occasionally need a reboot.

After a couple of days doing fine....the freeze hit. I was truely out of ideas & too scared of what my Dad said to do (put it in the freezer i.e. it will shock the battery into everything being normal again. Besides the LOL of this idea my computer person says that you can do that on a hard drive for a desktop buit the KF has a glass screen that would crack. So no lol about it I guess & I just set it down on the table & walked away. Eventually the battery went dead & I recharged it totally & it went back to normal like nothing had happened. I've not had another of the freeze episodes & I don't need that to ever happen again, please be nice KF! But...the light does not stay on (on/off) all the time. Also I have a Cisco router & in order to go on the internet I have to turn off the router & DSL modem (10/25) seconds then turn them back on......go through the wifi & internet turn on; it works but I have to do this every single time for the internet & wifi. Now it's getting goes off the internet while working on it. Does this have to do with the on/off button not lighting all the time? Charging light (orange) never does this. Ideas?

My kindle has just froze for the first time and these comments helped alot, but the other day my kindle fire as i was using it the screen went black, (when it did i was sure i had 50% battery life left), after it went black it would not turn on. I placed it on the charger the next morning and finally got it to turn on. It said it now had 0% battery life. How can this happen? Does anyone else have these issues? I dont have very many apps installed or books so i dont understand why my Kindle fire would be having gliches. Can anyone help? i would like a solution to help my Kindle, or set my mind at ease.

My kindle fire has just froze for the first time also. I had held the power button in and did get it to turn off but will not turn back on. I will plug it in and hopefully in the morning will be ok.

Hi Annie
I am desperate and am trying your suggestion. What do you mean: "I went to Amazon, seen to hold the off/on button?" Do you mean your kindle? Do you do that while your kindle is still hooked up with the PC? My problem started yesterday, and I have not been able to reset it at all. There is just no movement on the kindle.

My KF got stuck after playing a game at the first time , I tried to shut down first but it was still stuck with " shut down " screen, so I tried again to reboot it by holding in the power button in 20 seconds, after that turning on KF as usual , it was rebooted :)
