Paperwhite 1 versus Paperwhite 2

I read a review that gave a great explanation of the difference in the two.

"It happened repeatedly: I would pick up a Paperwhite to test it out, read for a while, and then discover that I was holding the device I bought a year ago instead of my review unit. Only the most discerning of readers will notice the differences in hardware here: a slightly changed Kindle logo, a slightly higher-contrast screen."

So, the question of "upgrading" is settled for me. I thoroughly enjoy my Paperwhite 1 and when it dies I'll get a Paperwhite 2, or 3 or 4 depending.

Thanks for the link to that review. I had already decided to upgrade but if I hadn't, that article might have decided me. His description of the new features make it sound very attractive.

I knew about the Page Flip feature. That was one of the reasons I want the new one. I didn't know it worked with bookmarks the way he explained and that will make it even more useful.

I'm hopeful those features will come to my old Paperwhite, and I think at least some of them probably will. Maybe all. But I'm ready for them now.

I wouldn't let this review scare off those who were dissatisfied with the original though. I found the original, especially in a dim or dark room, much too blotchy and unevenly lit to even be usable. The new one is not perfect but completely readable now, and I'm quite happy with it. For those already happy with the original though, I agree with this review and see no reason to upgrade unless the new features were never offered in a software update to the original PW.
