I haven't accessed my Kindle for PC for a month or so. Today almost every book I try to open, whether new or not, gives me this error. It says: The book could not be opened. Please remove the book from your device and redownload it.

I have removed books, redownloaded them, uninstalled Kindle for PC and reinstalled, etc.

Anyone else have this problem?

Everything was fine last time I used my PC a month ago...

I made it clear to my PC that I was about to upgrade to an iPad, then it sort of started working.

Delete the ebooks on PC
De-register and then register Kindle for PC
uninstall and reinstall Kindle for PC.
Your books should appear in the archive.
Then just double click on each one to redownload.

Christopher,

Thank you for the information. I had done most of the steps you indicated but not in the right sequence. Thank you.

I have the same problem on one of my laptops (Kindle for PC Windows 7). I go through the steps Christopher listed and everything works fine. However, next time I log on to the laptop I recieve the error on any books I have in Home. And receive download errors when trying to add to home. This laptop is my work laptop and it has the same configuration, Anti-Virus etc as my work PC. I have no problems with Kindle for PC on my work PC. Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

Update: I just "purchased" a free book and had it sent to the laptop I have having the issue with. The book was delivered instantly and perfectly to the laptop. It opens without a problem. It seems the problem is with books that are in the "archive" being moved to "Home".
Thanks!

Thanks Christopher. Deregistration/re-registration worked for me without having to uninstall/reinstall the software.

Many thanks, Christopher. This is pretty frustrating.

does anyone know how to prevent this from re-occurring, when the error re-occurs later on?

Yep I'm having the same problem and told them about it in feedback. Everything was fine for 1st 4 or 5 months I used it and now... everythings fked up. Theres no way I'm deleting all my books, re downloading the kindle, re registering it, and ANDD re downloading everytime I wanna read a book all of sudden, when everything was fine before some crappy downgrade. Took me 2 to 3 hours just to re download the Kindle on my PC, PLUS 25- 35 mins to re download the books, when it only took a second to download a book on my kindle on the older version which worked perfect. That worked for the last 3 books I just ordered and I had to call customer service for but now..... I just wanna read a book and I'm getting this crap for ALL of my books in my Kindle. They just lost a whole lot of money in Amazon kindle book sales from me. Tired of telling these ppl who mess with the stuff if it doesn't need to be fixed quit breaking it... doing nothing but losing ppl and money

guess they dont like to hear the truth.. they deleted my last post on me having same problem.. and was pissed off about it..

ANYWAY..

just came back to let you all know somebody named named Valerie on kindle support 800 # told me how to fix the problem when it happens. Like someone else said. For Kindle on PC CLOSE your KINDLE APP then Go into MY DOCUMENTS > find the MY KINDLE CONTENT folder > and DELETE that folder > RE OPEN the Kindle on your desktop > RE REGISTER > then RE DOWNLOAD each book

Turns out its a memory problem just like deleteing files in your cache. That's al ot quicker and easier than re downloading the whole Kindle app like the last girl in customer service had me do.

A. Johnson says:
when you re open the Kindle after deleting the my kindle content folder its gonna pop up a warning saying something about cannot open file.. just click the ok button and the Kindle App will open back up so you can re register it

Thanks Christopher. I followed your advice, and after deregistering and reregistering, problem solved.

T. John says:
I had the same problem

I exited(closed) my Kindle application
De-registered my Kindle for PC on the amazon website (a simple click-easy enough)
went into "My Documents-> My Kindle Content" and deleted the files in that folder

and then opened up my Kindle and it loaded fine and my books were working again

problem solved took all of about 5mins...not even

hope that helps

ALSO if your 'kindle content' isn't in the 'my documents' folder (i.e. if your ebooks are being saved somewhere else on your PC) you can find out from the Kindle App..just go to 'options' in the toolbar and then 'content'

Worked for me, thanks!

I just wanted to add that for Mac users, the My Kindle Content folder will probably not be in the Documents folder, but in your Library/Application Support/Kindle. (To know for sure, go to Preferences on the Kindle menu and look under Content Folder.)

Other than that, the steps work just fine. (Thanks!)

Do bookmarks and notes you have put in your books survive this process?

Christopher,

That did the trick. I'm posting so that others know your solution works.

Thank you.

Thanks A. Johnson, T. John. That got me going again.

OMG thanks - I have redownloaded this app a half dozen times over the past two months. Professor in my MBA program recommended using this to save money. Won't happen again - going back to old school books, and recommending to him that he quit recommending this. What a pain!

This is ridiculous. No matter how easy this fix is, we shouldn't have to continually do it! This is definitely the last book I buy for this P.O.S software.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 8, 2012, 4:18:07 PM PST
Worked for me too. I found out the hard way that you've got to de-register with Amazon first, then delete the My Kindle Content file in My Documents, then re-open the app.

I had to delete the folder, de-register, and re-register...again.

This is certainly a large reason why DRM is a fail. It does nothing to prevent piracy and only punishes those of us who buy things legit. The problem with de-registering and re-registering is when it happens on an airplane at 30,000 feet.

If companies feel compelled to DRM their product, they need to ensure that those of us who actually buy the product can use the product.
