I pre-ordered a HD 8.9 last week, now I find out after spending $369. My new Kindle will new coming with ads. Unless I pay a $15 fee to remove them. So I have a better idea when I get home from work. (Can't seem to cancel pre-orders on mobile phones.) I'm canceling my Kindle and get a tablet that's ad free without having to pay even more fees.

Amazon doesn't monitor these forums. Why would other customers care that you are going to cancel? Most of the people here, read the product page and know if the device is ad supported or not before ordering.

If, by chance, you think you are letting Amazon know - click on help at the top of the page and then the contact us button on the next page.

Enjoy your new purchase. I'll enjoy that there should be one less new whiner on the fora.

Win-Win

Whew...had me worried there for a minute...thought Kirby was gonna get an ad-supported Fire there for a minute! Oh, the horror...

Personally...I don't like the idea of ads either...got the kids ad-supported kindles to save money...not a problem...until some inappropriate ads showed up...ads kids don't need to see, not that the ad itself was offensive...so I called Amazon...they politely took my complaint...and I haven't seen ads of that calibre again...I am sure I wasn't the only one...

So...when my ad-supported 8.9 fire shows up...(happy dance)...I will check it out, see how obtrusive they are or are not...and if I don't like them...will pay my $15 - and STILL come out cheaper than any other pad with these capabilities and support...oh...and that's even AFTER I buy a nice, expensive, LEATHER cover...

If the ad wasn't offensive than what was?
I have had a Kindle with SO since they were first available and I haven't seen any ads that were even close to offensive.

One thing to keep in mind, and it's apparently a feature that CAN'T be removed, though it is a form of advertising, is that the Favorites bookshelf, found underneath the carousel on the original Fire, has now been moved/hidden, and has been replaced by "Customers Also Bought" that's always visible on the new Fires' home screens (in vertical mode only apparently). This "Customers Also Bought" feature is tied to which ever carousel item you are currently on when scrolling through the carousel. So, if naughty ebooks are your choice de jure, then I wonder what the "Customers Also Bought" section will feature as you scroll (or your children scroll) through all that naughty, naughty carousel content?

The "Customers Also Bought" is more troublesome to me that the ads on the sleep page.

I am very interested in the "customers also bought" feature as well. It doesn't bother me, but I wonder if you can shut it off. Take a look at the images on the product page for the Fire HD 8.9" model. The image where Amazon shows the measurements of the device clearly show a Fire in Portrait mode, but with icons for apps instead of the "customers also bought" suggestions. So is this a feature that needs to be turned on, or is it photoshopped with a feature that may never be available (replacing the "bought" suggestions with shortcut icons)? I guess we will find out someday. November isn't coming fast enough!

I guess that I am one of the few, because those ads don't bother me at all. I see as more as a free screensaver.

I haven't received mine Fire HD yet (we travel and it's being forwarded to me) but hubby has the original Fire. He loved the favorites bookshelf because I am constantly downloading books for my Kindle Touch. Hearing that it is gone with the new version is disappointing. Wondering how well I am really going to like this....any thoughts or comparisons?

D. McNicol, there is still a Favorites area below the Carousel. It's not visible until you access it, but it's there. It grows as you add books, and you can still drag them around to sort them. It looks a little different, there is no bookshelf graphic, but it works the same.

Quite right, Meya!

D., just tap the little star at the bottom right of the screen.

I mistakenly thought that paying to remove ads would remove the "other users bought..." carousel. Alas, that isn't the case. :-(( Frankly I find this muchore annoying than the "special offers." Oh well ....

I have just preordered 2 new kindleHD $299, one for me, one for mom. I was quite relieved that we were offered an opt out option on ads.

I do not know how I will react to what other customers bought on the home screen. When I am shopping at Amazon, I do not mind finding out what other customers bought. Sometimes this data is actually helpful.

But that is when I am on my computer actually shopping and purchasing an item. I have very mixed feelings about having this data on my home screen.

I love my original Kindle Fire as does my mother and the two other friends we bought Fires for at Christmas. One of the things I liked about the front page was the favorites section. While I acknowledge that you can still access favorites, I do not know why Amazon took them off the home page. I really do not like the idea of treating my kindle Fire hd as a marketing center for products particularly if we spend the $15 to opt out.

I guess I will only know my full reaction when I see the new Kindle Fire. But until then, maybe I should consider my alternatives.

Then turn your KFHD to the landscape orientation. The "customers also bought" strip will disappear.

Favorites is not "gone." You simply touch the star on the bottom right of the device and an entire page of favorites shows up. If you have more favorites than fit on a single page, it scrolls.

did you order it directly from amazon or did you order it from a store?

I don't get the whining about ads, YOU bought the kindle, and YOU should have done the bare minimum of research which would have let you know you would get ads unless you paid the 15 bones, it's not exactly physics, is it?

Also, you don't have to go to landscape to remove "customers also bought", just go to applications and unclick, simplicity itself.
