My wife got a gen 1 Kindle Fire that she *never* uses that I'm absconding for a cross-country flight towards the end of August.

Working in the IT/Security field, I know quite well to approach things like open wi-fi in, say, airport terminals with protection, and normally I'd just open an SSH tunnel on my laptop and push all the traffic through that, which works well.

I'm hoping to *avoid* bringing my laptop if at all's just one more thing to keep track of.

Has anyone had any success getting a gen 1 Fire to use some sort of protected connection? Or am I stuck bringing my laptop?

(I'm not above rooting or anything...I've had 4 different Android phones, and the *first* thing I do on them is root them, followed by removing the vendor bloatware)

Christopher, you might want to ask this on the Mobile Reads forum.

Most of the technical people do not come to this forum anymore.
