Can't make up my mind on whether I should buy the 8 inch or 7 inch kindle fire HDX

I can't make up my mind. I have a paperwhite. It's ok, but honestly I enjoyed reading books more on my wife's 1st generation kindle fire. Plus I could do other things like use the web, check email, etc.

Right now I'm going back and forth on what I should do. Should I get a kindle fire hdx 7 or get the more expensive bigger version? Is it really worth the higher price?

Personal choice.

Do you travel a lot? You may prefer the smaller one. Do you sit for hours playing games, reading, email, etc.? The larger one may fit your lifestyle better. Do you watch movies or youtube on a tablet? Then the larger one is a must. Photo editing? Then the 8.9 is better.

Remember, you can always send it back and get the smaller one if you think the 8.9 is too heavy or bulky. Or try out the displays at Staples. But buy from Amazon.

Do you have a smart phone/ tablet? If so, you may want to consider downloading the Kindle App. Saves you money, but more importantly, saves you the need to carry two separate devices

Nope, I don't travel. I use my PC most of the time but when I'm winding down I like to read or just do some websurfing on the side. Especially when I have to go visit my inlaws. :-)
I guess I'm wondering if the difference is all that major? I don't really watch any movies on a phone, but that's due to the fact my phone is so small it kills my eyes to watch movies on it.
As for sending it back, I'm not too excited about that thought. I hate returning stuff.

Yes, I've done that. I can't read on my phone, screen is too small. I don't enjoy the experience. I don't have a tablet, partly why I'm thinking about buying one. I am also thinking of getting a cheap laptop but it seems for my purposes it may not be as convenient.

I myself own the first generation 7inch fire, plus the 8.9HD fire since they first came out.
When the HDX's came out, all I could afford was the 7inch 16gig HDX which was available
on a one day $50 off sale. I found out last week that I qualified to buy the 8.9HDX 64gig
on the instalment plan and it arrives tomorrow. I love both sizes, but prefer the larger fire
for surfing the web and watching videos, plus the text to speech is wonderful. If I could
only have one it would be the 8.9HDX 64gig fire. But which ever one you buy, l would
suggest the 32 or 64gig.

While my finances pretty much limit me to a 7" (because I want the hdx, rather than the hd), I am trying to figure out the value of the extra on-device storage...

While my actual usage wants will probably change once I have the kindle, right now I'm expecting that we'll mostly read and stream movies (and occasional gaming) in places with wifi, with occasional reading/listening/watching/gaming in non-wifi environments.

I'm thinkin' we might download a movie or two at a time to watch in the park or on a bus trip, but that we'll delete after we've seen it. We have ipods and whatnot for music, and even my first gen basic kindle held more books on the device than I would be able to read in a month--with plenty more in cloud storage, once we're in a wifi hotspot.

How much space does a movie take up, and what else should I be considering, on-device storage-wise?

Thanks, in advance...

I recently had the opportunity to.compare the two, mainly by accident. First, I bought the HDX 7 due to the cyber Monday sale. Loved it, thought the video quality was superb, *but* the reading screen for books was slightly blotched/yellowy...
While I was still deciding what to do 're the screen, amazon posted their original time-delay payment schedule, and I decided to give the 8.9 HDX a shot.

And now I am in love with the 8.9. Deciding factors: the lightweight is just amazing, video quality is stupendous, and, for me, reading is really enjoyable--unlike many, I have no problem/i like reading on a tablet and I particularly like the landscape version with a double-page, much more like 'real' book reading to me. I got the 32gb because I wanted to be able to have a decent number of prime videos downloaded and on tap. One caveat - I do have some of the HDX connectivity issues that many have documented in the forums. For me, it's an irritant but doesn't rise to the level of obstruction but YMMV.

And returning the HDX 7 was a breeze - using the original packing, I printed out the amazon provided label and dropped it off at a ups drop in a snap...I could have also scheduled a pick up at my home, all through following links on my amazon account.

W. J. Casper III - Keep in mind that the operating system takes up some internal storage.

Fire HDX Internal Storage:
16GB (10.9GB available to user)
32GB (25.1GB available to user)
64 GB (53.7GB available to user)

General estimates of how much space Amazon Instant Videos will require:

A 22 minute-long video downloaded in Standard Definition will need anywhere from 120MB to 350MB of space, while High Definition requires up to 1.7GB, depending on the quality.

A 90 minute video will need anywhere from 490MB to 1.4GB for Standard Definition, and up to 6.8GB for High Definition.

For a 120 minute video, up to 9.1GB may be required for an HD download.

For people who want to watch videos, the 8.9 is the better choice. For reading, I also like the 8.9 in screen because I can increase the font size and still have a decent amount of text on the screen. The 8.9 HDX is surprisingly light weight as Miss M mentions, and I've been having those same pesky connection issues tonight. So, instead of streaming, I downloaded the videos, and having the max memory came in handy.

Those who have responded to you are correct, 32gig's is the smallest you would be happy with. The resolution of the 8.9HDX is even better than Apple's I Pad Air. Dying to know what you decide. Whatever you decide we will be here for you, to answer whatever questions you have.

I opted for the bigger screen on my Fire and love it. It is great for when you aren't reading and doing other things on it especially videos and web surfing.

I have my Paperwhite and Keyboard if I want to read on a smaller screen.

It is all personal preference.

Very interesting. I hadn't considered the weight but that's a good point. I'm not too concerned about storage space as I will typically just stream everything anyway.

If you are streaming movies, then you want the 8.9.

However, I'm going to tell you that I just got the Roku box, and love it. It streams Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu Plus, in addition to so many free "classic" stations. We "cut the cord" two years ago, and outside of sports, I haven't missed satellite a bit! I have Apple TV in one room and Roku in the other.

Oh right. I also have a roku and it's good at what it does. Hmm...still thinking but the 8.9 is getting so very tempting.

I got the HDX 8.9 for Christmas and it has become my 'go to' device. I've had the 7'' Fire since it came out and I didn't think the screen size would matter to me but I've found that I prefer the larger screen for videos and for reading, except of course outdoors. The HDX 8.9 is actually lighter in weight than my 7'' second generation Fire and I carry the HDX every day.

I found the same thing. I love my HDX 8.9. I have a big purse anyway.

I don't think you will miss getting a 16gb 8.9 because, like you, I stream, occasionally download 1 movie then delete when done and play a few games/apps...and storage isn't an issue. I love the bigger screen than my 7'HD and find reading, web browsing, emailing, video watching is all vastly improved. Go big and stick with the most storage you can afford.

Thanks everyone for your input. It was very helpful. I decided on the HDX 8.9 yesterday. I am actually kind of excited. Delivery is today though I didn't do overnight shipping. Gotta love kindle orders coming so fast. :-D

I'm late to this party, but here's my 2¢. I had a 1st gen 7, which I loved. Then because my kid was always wanting to play apps on it, I bought myself a 2nd gen 8.9 HD. I lurrrved the bigger screen (my aging eyes, you know).

But I did find it to be heavier to hold; I got a prop-up cover, and that made all the difference! The newer 8.9's are lighter, though.

My son unfortunately dropped my 8.9 and smashed the glass, so I took my 7 back from him. It's still a great little toy, but I do miss the size of the 8.9 screen.

I just ordered a refurb 8.9 during the Deal yesterday. Which is timely, because my 1st gen 7 has developed the notorious port-problem. Let the Fire-smashing kid deal with THAT! Hah.

I should have read all the way down! I think you're going to love it. :0)

Ha ha no problem. My eyes have been bugging me lately so I think the bigger size will be beneficial in that regard.

Mine arrived early Tuesday evening, and after fully charging it, started to get acquainted with it. Am totally in love with it. I can not believe how light it is. First thing I did was download several episodes of the Glades and Grimm, plus a few movies. I was blown away by how good they looked, I am one happy camper.
