Yesterday I checked out the Paperwhite working display unit at Staples. I wanted to see if it had the same screen problems that more than a few reviewers have described on the Amazon product page. In fact I returned two units when the Paperwhite was first introduced for the same reason.
Wow! I was amazed at how good the screen looked. No color splotches at different places on the screen and only very faint shadows at the bottom. I even viewed it in different lighting conditions and settings. Consistently white throughout the screen surface.
So I called over the store manager and asked her if I could purchase it after explaining my previous negative experiences. She declined and added they are currently sold out and yet to have any returns.
So I'm wondering...did the first batch of Paperwhites have defective screens, a situation which has now been corrected? Or has Amazon released store displays which have been individually tweaked to look more like the ones in the ads? I plan to buy one from Staples when they are back in stock to find out.
