If you want to go the Amanda Hocking route, she's got Hollowland (The Hollows, #1).
I enjoyed it.

I have heard that World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is REALLY good. I haven't read it yet. It is 9.99, so is still on my wish list!

That book is amazing. There are also a ton of (cheaper) indie zombie books, but I won't be much help there as I haven't read any yet.

Zombie Betrayal is free right now.

Robin: I am a die-hard zombie fan and I highly recommend:
Tooth And Nail by Craig DiLouie, for $4.79. The best e-book I read in 2011. The author has another title on sale for 2011, but I have not read it yet. But this one is gooood!

The Gathering Dead by Stephen Knight. This $2.99 thriller and the novella that follows (Left With The Dead (A "Gathering Dead" Novella), only $0.99) are two excellent zombie action thrillers.

I am currently reading a good zombie thriller: Zombiestan by Mainak Dhar. I am only about 25% into this $0.99 thriller, but I am enjoying it.

But Tooth & Nail and The Gathering Dead are pretty darn good books. They both got me hooked on their authors.

A. says:
A book of short stories that I found VERY enjoyable was The Living Dead. Some straight forward, some with very different perspectives. Also, the second in the series, The Living Dead 2. Great collections with authors from big to small. Also, a book by the author of "Let the Right One In", (John Lindqvist), Handling the Undead.

Oh, most definitely Feed, and its sequel Deadline. The third and final book in the trilogy is forthcoming.

I'd also second the rec that A. made, for the Living Dead anthologies.

The Dishonored Dead: A Zombie Novel by Robert Swartwood was great. It has bit of a different twist. Sorry, don't know how to make the link.

The end of Feed is a kick in the gut.

Haunted me for days. Takes a good book to pull that off -- I don't haunt easily.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth was pretty good. It's also available to loan, if you're interested.

Yeah I loved the whole series!

World War Z is really good, but some of the cultural references are begining to feel a little dated now.

Kieri says:
Try Raising Stony Mayhall...zombies from a slightly different point of view. Other favorites are Love in a Time of Zombies ($1!!!) and Zombocalypse Now (Chooseomatic Books) ($2.99, and I promise you there are no other zombie books written in choose-your-own adventure format starring a stuffed bunny).

Drew M. says:
Right now, I am sick of all things Max Brooks, so I won't be seconding the World War Z recommendations.

One of my personal favorites is Day by Day Armageddon

It's an epistolary novel (diary) that follows a US Naval officer and it features good ol' fashioned Romero-type zombies.

Monster Island: A Zombie Novel is fairly decent too.

ETA: Darn it. Frank Tuttle beat me to the Day By Day Armageddon recommendation.

CoachD says:
A. Montoya, let's face it, Day by Day Armageddon and it's sequel: Beyond Exile: Day by Day Armageddon are both top of the line zombie books. The ops is looking for good zombie books and these are two of the best.

Another good example is Ex-Heroes by Peter Clines. Superheroes & zombies. I love it, and can't wait for the sequel!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The prequel, Dawn of the Dreadfuls, is supposed to be good as well, but I only read some of it when I was looking around a bookshop in LA before a movie.
