Most people find reading in the Fire, any model, to not be a great experience if you are outdoors in the sun. I have a Fire HD 7" and I won't even try to use it outside. It's not even great in a car.

The Fires are tablets with backlit LCD screens. It will be much like using a laptop or smartphone outdoors. Turning the brightness up and sitting in the shade will help. If you want to be able to read in bright sunlight, an e-ink Kindle is best.

Thanks, Ann
I did find a marked difference outdoors when I set the brightness setting to auto, as opposed to manually setting it.

I am thinking of replacing my Kindle Fire with Fire HD 8.9 but wondered if the connection for charging the battery is better than the Kindle Fire.

The KF HD 7 micro USB jack has had very few if any complaints registered on this forum. I would expect the 8.9 HD to have the same improvements on its jack. The number of 8.9's is much less than the 7's.
