On the iPad it's simply a matter of making sure the movie is in QuickTime format when doing a sync. Irrespective of the Kindle model (not sure which I'll get yet) what format does a home movie have to be in to view it on Kindle? QuickTime or some other?

You would want a Kindle Fire of course - not something like the Paperwhite. The supported formats are listed on the product page.

I think I chose the Iphone option when I converted a quicktime movie to view on my original Fire.

The video needs to be in MP4 format, or you need to find an app that can play it in the format it's in.

So QuickTime movies the way to go?

A. Dietz says:
Quicktime movies will NOT play on a Kindle Fire unless you can find an app that will play them.

What I meant is when I have a quicktime movie that I want to play on my Fire I use save as Iphone so that it will play. I do not know whether there is a more direct route from whatever device you are taking the movies on.

When I got my first Fire I checked out various programs to rip and convert to MP4 format from DVDs. I was told that MP4 is what the i-devices play. I've ripped and converted many DVDs and choosing the format for the i-devices has always worked on my Fires. I've had a first generation, have a second generation and an HDX. All of my videos work on all the devices I currently have that play videos (the first gen Fire is gone but the others are still in use, as well as an android phone)
