I have heard of a v-card format but can not remember exactly what to do so will have to study on it but you have helped me. Hi, thanks for suggestion. I have all my contacts in gmail and use the gmail app on the Fire. When I go to contacts one of choices is 'import/export'; when I pick this, choice comes back as 'import from internal storage' and is looking for a vcard. Still cannot get my contacts in. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

I have done it on Outlook. Indeed you have to export each contact as a separate file. Go to the "Contacts" menu item on the lower left edge of the screen. Then right click on a contact you want to export and choose Send Full Contact then In Internet Format(Vcard). Next you attach these files to the email address you use on your fire, probably the same one your getting the contacts from. Open your email on the fire and open each attachment. The info will be saved to your contacts.

this worked like a charm, I saved the files to Vcard format and sent them as an email attachment to myself, opened them in my Kindle and hit save for each one at a time. If you email too many at a time each one takes longer to download, but if you only send 20 or so at a time, you can just hit save quickly one after the other and it does it in no time.

Yes. You need a cable that isn't shipped with the Fire to connect it to your computer, but the power cable that ships with the Fire plugs into a USB micro port. If you get (or already have) the right cable, it'll work for that. The Kindle Fire doesn't have a host capability, so you can't connect a drive or a keyboard to it, but it will work for connecting the Fire *as a drive.

eta: I think this one will work:
