Kindle Fire upside down

I started using my kindle fire yesterday, somehow, the lock screen is fine, but everything else is upside down and I can't get it to go into horizontal mode either. I have rebooted by holding down the power button for 20 seconds, as well as for a second and selected "shut down"

I got an answer elsewhere on this forum. There is a setting on the top bar called Lock and Unlock which refers to the screen orientation. Somehow I had Locked it in upside down mode. Here are the instructions for the other post for those with the same problem:

My first guess is you accidentally locked the device with the screen upside down. Try this:

Turn on the Kindle
Unlock it
Tap the settings icon in the upper right.
On the menu that pops up, it should show unlocked on the far right. If it shows locked, tap it to unlock it, and you should be good to go.

See if that works.

I'm glad everybody found it. You never have to be that annoyed with the Kindle, though. You can always contact Kindle Support at

You'll see a

Contact Us

button. You can call them, have them call you (that's cool), e-mail, or chat, and they'll help you with those sorts of thingsl

One other thing: some people keep it "upside down" all the time it is in portrait mode. Why? It puts the power button on the top so you won't actually push it while it is on your lap or a table. It does mean that the unlock swipe screen is upside down, but you can either swipe it that way or turn it back rightside up for that.

several apps (triple town, trials extreme, contre jour) invert orientation, and there is no solution, unless of course you manually lock your device. that' s pretty inconvenient. I hope Amazon is working on a fix

it's not Amazon's to fix - it's the developer who needs to fix it

I'm having the same problem too. All of the apps/games that I open flip upside down. You shouldn't have to lock your screen every time you open a game. Our other kindle does not have this problem, it only happens on the kindle hd.

When I go to take a picture on instagram the camera is upside down. Any way a turn it it makes it go the other way. But when I turn on the video camera it works perfectly fine.

Most of my games and other apps are loading upside down...there does not seem to be a solution have changed the kindle twice saying that it must be faulty..I am keeping this one (kindle fire hd)as I am fed up with loading all my material each time.......I wish I had never bought it. They have been ok on the phone but don't seem aware it is a common fault...don't they check the forums ?

There is nothing wrong with your Fire. Each app developer has to write it so that it's "flippable"...or not.

Posted on Jan 15, 2014 3:36:44 PM PST
That said, you DID unlock the screen, yes?

Posted on Jan 15, 2014 3:39:00 PM PST
Or, have you tried rotating the Fire in its case?

I've had no problem with asp until now. A new one always flips no matter how I turn the Kindle. Ill try the lock and see if it helps. But is a bit stupid!
