Just bought a Kindle Paperwhite, feeling uncertain it's the new generation -- how to tell?

I just bought a Kindle Paperwhite at Best Buy. Now that I've got it home I find myself wondering if it's really a new-generation Paperwhite. The guy at the store was pretty dim -- told me mistakenly he was selling me an ad-free machine, for instance. So I'm wondering if he was right about the Paperwhite he sold me being brand-new and up to date. In any case, with my new Paperwhite in hand, how can I tell if it's a brand-new, new-generation (I guess it's considered 6th gen?) Paperwhite? What giveaways are there? Tks in advance.

Look at the model number on the box. The new one is BBY0005MH. The first gen is B007MHZJDC.

Best Buy is selling them both.

All Kindles sold at retailers such as Best Buy are the Special Offer models. If you really dislike them, you can opt out for $20. They only show on the sleep screen, and on the bottom of the home screen. They never show when reading.

The new one says Amazon on the back. The original said Kindle.

Meya and K. Mallery's suggestions above will give you the answer; so will the boxes. The original PW says, in white, "First Ever Paperwhite Display" on the bottom left front. On the new, the print on the lower left front of the box is blue and says, each in little boxes, "WiFi", "Daylight Readable" and "Built-In Light", each with an icon of the descriptor.

What if you don't have the box, and your Paperwhite says Kindle on the back AND towards the bottom, says amazon. The model is EY21.

You can look up the model number on the device itself in the settings section. That will give you the difference Meye was talking about.

If the word Kindle is at the center of the back, in largish type, that is a first gen Paperwhite.

You could make sure you have the latest update.

Thank you! The option to "Update" is not lit, which I am "ass"uming means I'm updated. :D

Actually, it doesn't show the number in my "Settings" section. I guess it doesn't for 1st Generation.

*always a day (Generation) late, and a dollar short* lol

It can mean you haven't received the update.
You can update manually, if you would like, through links on that page.

I haven't bothered with this update myself as the Collections portion messes things up for long-time kindlers.

So when you click menu > settings it no longer gives the serial number under Device Info?

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 30, 2014, 1:24:14 PM PDT
bullie says:
I don't get that option. I have to to ONLINE to check my serial number, but neither were the ones listed by the previous poster. I had to find another way, again, online, to figure out I have the older model.

♥ Ann says:
On a Paperwhite, tap Menu > Settings > Menu (again!) > Device Info. That should show the serial number, and the software version.

Kewl! Got it! Tapping TWICE was the trick. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
