my paperwhite is updating for the second time since I've had it (10/9) and it seems to be stuck, for over 15 minutes now. Is this normal?

When you say it's updating, what exactly are you seeing?

There haven't been any software updates to the Paperwhite yet, so like John said, what are you seeing? What is it doing to make you think that it is updating.

John and Chew, the paperwhite was off both times and the kindle tree popped up on the screen with a progress bar. The first time it finished and went back to the regular off screen, and last night it was the same tree screen and progress bar, but it was stuck right before it finished. After about 2 hours I turned it on and it was fine. FYI, it stuck again this morning on a page of text, I had to do a restart.

I'm finding minor glitches like this, along with the black spots on the bottom of the screen. Nothing major and I guess it's not unexpected with a brand new product.

It should not be spontaneously rebooting like that. You should probably call customer service and see what they recommend.

Your Kindle is rebooting itself, not updating, and it shouldn't be doing so. You'll want to contact support about this. Click the "Help" link at the top of any Amazon page, then press the "Contact Us" button. Phone or chat options are best.
