Can you connect a Kindle to a computer monitor and stream vidoes on that monitor? If so, which Kindles will do this?

P. Hendley - No. If you want to watch Amazon Instant Videos on your computer, either stream them using the browser or install Unbox Video Player - http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/ontv/player

Can't the OP use a computer monitor if the monitor has an HDMI input?

If you get a kindle that has the hdmi output .... the 2012 Fire HD's.

No, because it's not a TV.

R. D. Clark says:
Not the case, sorry. The HDMI input on a computer monitor will accept the same signals as the ones on TVs, as long as the monitor's input is HDCP compliant, as most smaller ones' are these days.

What makes a TV a TV is the presence of a tuner, a factor that doesn't matter when connecting a video source directly. HDMI, of course, supports copy protection which is why HDCP is mandatory at both ends of the cable.

How to confirm which Kindle's do have HDMI? I don't see any mention of it on the Amazon pages.

Only the 1st generation Kindle Fire HD models have an HDMI port. No current Kindle Fire models have one.

Retired EE says:
You can also use a PC monitor or projector with a DVI jack. The video part of an HDMI cable is identical to that of a DVI cable. An HDMI to DVI cable can be used between the old HD and a DVI input. They also make HDMI to VGA adapters for a few dollars. I have used a Micro HDMI to standard HDMI adapter with a HDMI to DVI with my HD. DVI doesn't carry sound so if that is needed you have to use the earphone plug. When I connect my HD to a DVI or HDMI device the speakers turn off. With the HDX you have to add a Miracast adapter to have HDMI access then the discussion above applies.
