Have to replace my busted Kindle Keyboard with Kindle Paperwhite. Don't like the idea of "Special offers" popups. May I assume that, while reading, if I do not enable Wi-Fi, the "Special offers" will *not* pop-up?

♥ Ann says:
The offers display on the sleep screen, and at the very bottom of the Home page. They never pop up anywhere, or display while reading.

You can unsubscribe from the Special Offers at any time if you find you don't want them.

See https://amazon.com/help/kindlespecialoffers for details.

K. R. says:
Special offers only appear on the screensaver, and as a small banner on the book menu screen (where you select a book to read). There are no pop-ups.

Special Offers never pop up on a Kindle Paperwhite. You will see one on the Sleep Screen and a very small banner add at the bottom of the Home page.
You will never see them when you are reading. You can keep your wi-fi on full time, because you will NEVER see a special offer *pop up* EVER.

Thanks, Ann. The link resolves my worry.

Am I understanding this correctly? The link says to unsubscribe, a one-time fee will be charged.

I have the Paperwhite with special offers and have no problem, as everyone has stated, NO pop-ups at any time. Just the sleep screen ad (usually books), and offer on very bottom of the home page.

Yes, you're reading that right. You'll be charged the difference between the full-priced device without special offers and the subsidized one with special offers that you bought.

When I bought my KK (fall, 2010), it was before special offers, when my parents bought theirs (summer 2011), special offers had come out. They decided they liked the lower price and so bought that - never had a problem with them at all. So when I just got my PW, I went with the special offers as well. So far it's just been books - I'm waiting breathlessly for the diaper baby!

Yes Randi. I paid $20 to have SO removed from a Paperwhite because it was being sent to a 10 year old child and I didn't want her to be bothered with the ads.

Here we go! eh, no.

K. R. says:
I've got two of the Kindle Keyboards (and one Kindle Touch & two Kindle Fire HDs). I bought the one KK before there were ones with SO, and bought the second later and got one with the SO. Of two, I actually prefer the one with SO - as I've gotten a bit tired of the drawings of dead authors that the non-SO displays while its sleeping. The ADs on the SO one change all the time, so there is something new to look at.

I wrote, "May I assume that, while reading, if I do not enable Wi-Fi, the "Special offers" will *not* [appear]? " I didn't get that part of my post answered, but I'm thinking, now, that replacing the "drawings of dead authors" will be to my liking. My new Kindle Paperwhite, which I just ordered, two minutes ago, is already giving me pleasure. :-)

K. R. says:
You will see something even with the WiFi turned off. Keep in mind that you will need to activate WiFi when you go to download any books you plan on putting on the Kindle - while the device is connected to do that, it will also be loading itself up with new special offers for later.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of special offers that will be shown, my Kindle Touch is showing an ad for the new Kindle Unlimited service. My Kindle Keyboard is showing an ad for 'Back to School' savings with $30 off the price of a new Kindle Fire HDX.. Before that it was some sci-fi book that was on sale (one I had already purchased).

On my old Kindle Keyboard, I routinely kept WiFi turned off. Can't remember exactly why I did it that way, but I think it was something about Kindle battery usage. Connected Kindle to PC with the battery charge cable. In the Amazon "buy now" box, select Deliver to: Transfer via Computer; that downloaded the book into my PC. Later, I would drag the downloaded books (mostly groups of freebies) into the Kindle. WiFi on Kindle not required. My Kindle clock was always out of sync.

K. R. says:
I guess you could do it that way.. But it seems like a lot of extra work, and you wouldn't get any updates to the books or for the Kindle.

Miss Carol says:
You will still get an ad - that says you don't have any new ads. My parents get them if they keep the wireless off for too long!

GDabney says:
AIStCroix, Special Offers don't pop-up, you don't see them while you're reading, they appear at the bottom of the screen when you turn on your Kindle.
