Anyone know what version of Andriod the Kindle Fire HD is running?

 Ann says:
It's based on 4.0.3 ICS.

See https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/fire/specifications.html

does Amazon has plans to upgrade Kindle Fire HD to a newer Android version?

Tinker-bella says:
If they are, it's unlikely they will post the information on a customer forum in advance such as this.

What you will see, however, is an available system update notification (that said, specifics of what the update includes are NOT always provided).

Probably not. Amazon used a forked version of Android with there own interface and software integrated into it, so it's not as simple as releasing an upgrade to Android for the Fire. I think if they move to a new version of Android (which would be Jelly Bean at this point), they will simply put in in the new Fires as they are released (maybe this Fall).

Google slapped a license on new versions of Android I believe, preventing 3rd party development SDKs. (http://www.infoworld.com/d/mobile-technology/kindle-fire-the-android-tablet-isnt-212632)
