Okay then. Thanks for stopping by and telling us. We'll all stop buying Amazon's books now.

You do know you can read Amazon Kindle books on an iPad very easily by downloading the Kindle app, right?

You're never going to get Amazon and Apple to merge formats. They're competitors. Your request that they do so is like you buying a Nintendo game and expecting to be able to play it on a Playstation console. Never going to happen.

1) Your opinion of what you should be able to do with an ebook has no basis in reality or current copyright law.
2) Amazon can't help you put a Kindle book in iBooks because it is impossible to do so.
3) Only a few book sites let you choose the book format - those that don't sell their own reader. That's not the business Amazon is in. You don't have to buy from them.

Wow. Did you also let Apple know you're disgusted at them for their part in not letting you read mobi in their app?

Aaaand, while we're on the subject, I'm disgusted by people who throw that word around here as though it actually applies. As far as your take on apps, e-book formats, customer service, etc., etc., I couldn't care less. Have a nice life.

ETA: Did you also tell your benefactor how little you appreciate the gift?
Or did you just come crying to other customers on the Kindle forum?

Tell the publishers. They are the ones who demand DRM protection.

WHY does she have to read it on the iPad? She could read it in the Cloud Reader (free).

Or...y'know...here's a thought... WHY NOT PUT THE (again FREE) Kindle app ON the iPad?

How hard is this, James?

"I also feel that if I buy a ebook I should be able to put it on whatever device that I want without jumping through hoop from Amazon or having to download an app that I don't really need."

The thing is, if you want to read a book in a format Apple doesn't support you DO need the app.

I am unfamiliar with iBooks. Can you use it to read unconverted files from Google or Barnes & Noble?

PeepDittie says:
B&N, no. Last I heard, even Sony Reader couldn't open B&N's proprietary DRM. Google, I'm not sure. I'd err on the side of caution and assume not, though.

Amazon customer support hung up without a word? Exaggerates much?

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 24, 2014, 7:49:20 PM PDT
R. Wilde says:
Well, I suppose it might be possible, depending on just how he "told the support agent" before being hung up on.

At least a year ago, you needed Google's app to read Google books on the iPad.

Yes indeed. When I worked in CS (not Amazon), we had strict instructions to hang up immediately if any customer ever swore at us.

But the CS person clearly recommended downloading the app ("without...having to download an app that I don't really need"); James just refused to accept that suggestion. I can imagine that at some point, the CS rep might well have found it rather profitless to simply keep on repeating how he could do it.

I'm also wondering, since he received the book "as a gift to his account" why he didn't just convert the gift to a credit and go buy the book in iBooks.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 25, 2014, 4:31:49 AM PDT
somewhere in his rant he said the book was only available on amazon

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 25, 2014, 4:35:17 AM PDT
I didn't read it that way. I read it as saying that he didn't like that Amazon's format couldn't be read in other apps, but not that the book itself wasn't available elsewhere.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 25, 2014, 5:18:12 AM PDT
[hand up] Yep. I worked in a telephone banking center, and while we were required to *try* to calm the accountholder down if they got upset, if they got abusive, if we warned them off once and they did it again, we were permitted to terminate the call.

Then we'd put a note on the account of what happened, so the next poor schmuck who got the (now more irate) caller would know what they were dealing with.

That's what I don't understand. Amazon PROVIDES apps for those platforms so that Kindle books CAN be read on them. I seriously do not understand James' complaint.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 25, 2014, 6:01:41 AM PDT
But then he'd have to OPEN ANOTHER APP (shock, horror!). Perhaps his wife rations the number of apps he's allowed to use; it's her ipad, after all.

Yes, big, evil Amazon only allows its Kindle books to be read on Kindle devices or Kindle apps. Apple, on the other hand, will let you read your ibooks anywhere, anytime, on any device you want.

Oh, wait...

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 25, 2014, 9:14:43 AM PDT
"That is why if I buy another ebook from Amazon it will be only because I could not find it ANYWHERE ELSE!"

ANOTHER ebook? If you had already bought ANY ebook from Amazon (prior to the gifted book), you would already have known that you needed the app. And if you DO buy an ebook at Amazon because you could not find it anywhere else, how are you going to read it if you do not want to download the app?????

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 25, 2014, 9:25:12 AM PDT
Funny..... I had the same thing with Apple. I got a book from apple and can't read it on my kindle. I think it is outrageous that I can't read it on any device I choose.
