Almin says:
What exactly is 3G and why is it free? For how long? Is it worth it?

3G refers to a cell phone carrier. Why is it free? I guess because it's because it is what Amazon offers, if you purchase an eink with 3G capability. It is for shopping in the Amazon store, downloading books, and visiting Wikipedia.

ETA: what am I thinking? Of course, it's not free... as Craig says, you pay a hefty premium for the device if it has 3G capability... and I should know that because I do have the 3G Paperwhite.

3G is a cellular connection for certain Kindles that allows you to shop for and download books. It does not allow you to surf the internet, check email, or the like. I have 3G on my Paperwhite - it's valuable if you travel a lot and don't have access to wifi all the time. I travel internationally, so for me, it's worth it. If you have access to wifi at home and/or work, you will have to decide if the premium price is worth it to you. Even with a 3G Kindle, you will need wifi to activate the device, download certain library books, and use the browser.

Essentially, it's not free - you pay a premium for the 3G model, and Amazon uses that to pay for the actual data that's used.

If you travel quite a bit and buy a lot of books then the 3G Paperwhite may be beneficial to you. Especially if you do not have wifi at home. You cannot check out library books via 3G - you need wi-fi for that.

I bought the 3G KK, then the 3G KT, but in retrospect, I wish I'd saved my money. It's easy to preload hundreds of books on wifi, so I should have thought ahead.

3G is nice to have for the translations/definitions while on the road (driving or riding on transit). I have 1 device with 3G and that's what I took to China and I was glad of it while at the airport waiting for my plane. (Free wifi at the airport is not easy to access in China)

You are also paying for the 3G hardware, so it isn't just for the 3G service.

That's a great point, but many of us just don't travel as much as you jet-setters!

I've never been called a "jet-setter" before. ROFL

I guess that's what happens when your son moves to China. :D
