I believe it is broken, e-ink screens are very fragile, any kind of pressure, or torque, or fall, can and will cause the screen to break. But you can always try contacting customer service, maybe they will be able to help you, or at least offer you a discount on your next kindle.

Don't worry about the exact question - just pick one close to what you want to talk about and have them call you (during US daytime business hours is usually best). They respond quite quickly.

Just keep choosing Something Else. As long as you start with the fact that it's a Kindle question, you'll be directed to the correct CS reps.

I agree with the others - don't worry about the actual question; pick something close, and get them to call you. I'm in Australia, and I've had absolutely NO problem talking to an actual person on several occasions. They are absolutely fantastic.

Even though you've ordered a new one, I'd still call them. You can explain that you thought your issue wasn't covered, but we assured you otherwise here, so you thought you'd still give it a go and see if there was anything they could do for you. And maybe there won't be, but you'll never know if you don't ask, and you don't even have to pay for the call.

That's awesome! Are they going to credit you since you bought one already?

Yay! Another chalk mark on the wall of how great Amazon is. They always go well beyond their minimum customer service obligations.

No, ok - not quite always. People who ring them with a sense of entitlement don't seem to get nearly as good an outcome :-)

Thaiophile says:
yes-- seema bit ponderous but I have to send my ordered one back when I get it together with the broken one for full credit THEN- they will sendme a freebee- I suggested that it made more sense to just credit me for the one I ordered but It seems that the system will only work that way- I'm Not argueing The old thing about gift horses etc?

Just Peachy says:
They want to get the broken one back just to be sure that you are telling the truth. Otherwise people would call and say "oh, my kindle broke and I bought a new one, how about giving me a credit on the new one" when their original Kindle wasn't broke.

They do make it easy to return the kindle, so in a few days you will be reading away with no old broken kindle in sight.

Yes, but they're asking her (or him?) to return the new one s/he's ordered too, and then they'll send out a third one. That does seem a bit odd.

Probably the systems aren't programmed to handle that scenario well.
One of those "who would have ever thought of this scenario" situations.

Did you perhaps have warranty? Were they willing to replace it even without a warranty? Thanks!

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 8, 2015, 2:30:35 PM PST
If it is replaced it is always while in warranty period. I haven't heard of many being replaced after a warranty has expired. No expectations of such either.

They do have Paperwhites available. Did you expect a free replacement, three months outside the warranty that covers only manufacturer's defects?
