I searched the forums. All of the posts I'm seeing are from pre-release or right after release. It's now March 2012 so I'm trying to see what's up with this now. What are the top apps that allow you to accept credit card payments on the Kindle Fire with or without a card reader? From what I've read...

Square is the most popular app for this but can't be used with the Kindle Fire because it requires a GPS function for security purposes.

GoPayment from Intuit is listed in Amazon's appstore for android, so I'm assuming it's compatible, but I've read a lot of negative reviews about Intuit's business practices and fee structure.

PayPal Here isn't available outside of the exclusive for select merchants yet and I see nothing about a release date so I don't know if it will work with the Fire or if it's worth waiting for it to be available to the public.

So is my only option right now to use Intuit if I need this ability now and only have my Fire as an option (I don't own a smartphone) or are there other established apps out there that some of you have had success with?

A. Dietz says:
One of the major problems with all of these apps is that you can't connect a card reader to the Kindle Fire so you'll have to enter all of the card numbers manually. You'll also have to be connected to a WiFi hotspot since there's no 3G on the Fire.

We haven't tried it yet but paymentmax specifically mentions use of the Fire. They support Android in general but in places they mention the Fire specifically. We just came across them in research this weekend so we haven't yet been able to find out anything about the fee structure, how well the app actually works or what the implications are of not necessarily being connected to the Internet all of the time.

Yeah whenever I search for kindle fire and card reader, that's what comes up but I've never heard of that company before and a lot of the links to and about it look spammy even though they may not be.

I had the gopayment app on my kindle before they took it away, and I was able to attach the card reader to the audio jack just like on the phone. I want to know why they took the app away, it is easier than trying to use my phone and I can create the hotspot with the phone for the kindle to attach to and get a signal, or use surrounding wi-fi if available.

were you able to process a payment when the app is available? I found a way to install the app. I works on trial mode. My account is still pending and I don't have a reader yet....so not sure if it will work once it gets here.
If it did work for you I can explain how to get it installed again....without rooting or changing anything on your fire.

funtime - the Fire does not officially support ANY connected device, so there is no recommended reader.

Any luck once you received the reader? Has anyone found a way to accept Credit Card payments with Kindle Fire? I'd like to use it at my business where I have wi-fi to accept payments.

I am using the PayPal Here card reader on my Kindle Fire HD with just a wi fi connection. Even though PayPal claims that the app doesn't work on Android tablets officially, it does. I got the app from 1mobile.com.

This is encouraging. :) This is exactly what I'd like to do with my Kindle Fire (not HD). I already use PayPal for my biz, so using PayPal Here card reader would be my best case scenario. I found that getting PayPal Here from 1mobile.com was easy and it installed w/o problems. Next step is to request the card reader from PayPal??

This is a naive question, but is there a way to verify a downloaded app is legit? I'm a bit hesitant to log in to PayPal via the app as I'd hate to compromise my password with an account associated with financial accounts as well as client eventually (hopefully) swiping client credit cards.

Hi Dayle - Yes, the card reader is free from PayPal. If you already have an account with them, it certainly doesn't hurt to try, so why not request one and see if it works for you? I have only tested it on my HD model from 2012, so I am not sure how it may function on the non-HD models. 1Mobile.com is a reputable source for apps, so you should be just fine. I've had the app on Fire for for over a year with no account issues, and no one's hacked into my account. If you have a device with access to Google Play, you can also sideload it from there. :) Here is a good article about sideloading apps:

No luck here. I signed up, and then logged in with the PayPal Here app I got from 1Mobile.com. Got error "Sorry, the PayPal Here card reader isn't compatible with your device yet. To accept card payments, you can manually enter the card number."

When I tried to enter credit card details manually, I got error:
"PayPal Needs Your Location. Please enable network and/or GPS location services in your phone's settings."
I confirmed Kindle's "Location set by GPS" option (aka Location-based Services) was on. Kindle Fire uses Wi-Fi to determine your location. But PayPal Here app still wouldn't let me go further.

So my test leaves me to believe it is not possible to use PayPal Here on Kindle Fire. :-( Still, I'm happy to have tried it. Perhaps there are other tests to try??? Or other ways to take credit card payments with a Kindle Fire??? If I receive the card reader, I'll give it a try, but I suspect even if connects to the headphone/mic jack, I'll still get blocked by not having true GPS location service...

Thanks Irene for your help.

Have you successfully entered a credit card payment on your Kindle using this app?

I was able to install the PayPal app from 1Mobile.com site -- this is the app that Irene reported success with using her Kindle Fire HD from 2012. I have 7" Kindle Fire (not HD) with WI-FI and a headphone jack; however, it lacks a microphone jack, camera, and GPS. I believe that the microphone jack is the normal way to connect the Paypal or Square readers. I'm going to try the Paypal card reader once it arrives -- it is thought by some that the headphone jack's design permits a combo headphone/microphone set.

At this point, I have not made a credit card payment on my Kindle Fire using the app. My first try that I reported was using the app to manually enter CC info (s/w only) and it failed. I was able to manually enter the details, but then got the error saying PayPal needs your GPS location... I'll give the card reader a try once I get it.

1Mobile is not "here." It's a separate site. You have to install the 1Mobile app from their website to your Fire and then search for the Paypal app.

That's odd. Mine works just fine with the Kindle Fire HD. (The 2012 model) Which model of Fire do you have?

Dumb question (on my part) were you connected to wi fi when you tried to enter the card manually?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 26, 2013, 4:57:58 PM PDT
Ahh! I think it's the lack of microphone on the non-HD models that prevents the card reader from working. I just tested mine again on my 2012 HD, and it works.

I just tried the PayPal Here app again and after signing on to my PayPal account, was immediately presented with a message that said Good news, the PayPal Here Now card reader is now compatible with your device! I clicked the order now button and got the message We'll ship your card reader right away. It'll arrive in about a week.

Well, this sounds good. Though, I requested the reader back on 10/22 with the same account, which makes me wonder why I was invited to order another one.

Trying to manually enter the CC details, I got same msg from the app: PayPal Needs Your Location. For consumer and merchant security, this application requires you to disclose your location. Please enable network and/or GPS location services in your phone's settings, then use the back key to return to PayPal Here.

Yes, I'm conected (via wi-fi). Location-based Services is enabled. But for some unknown reason, PayPal isn't recognizing the GPS location service of the Kindle Fire. :( If I receive the card reader, I'll give it a try.

Here's the update... and bottom line is that PayPal Here reader did not work on my Kindle Fire. :(

I received the PayPal Here reader, launched the PayPal Here app on the Kindle Fire, plugged the card reader into the audio jack and the app recognized it and said it was ready to use. But after swiping the card for a test transaction, got same error as I did after manually entering the credit card details:

PayPal Needs Your Location. For consumer and merchant security, this application requires you to disclose your location. Please enable network and/or GPS location services in your phone's settings, then use the back key to return to PayPal Here.

Again, I verified the Kindle Fire option "Enable Location-based Services" was turned ON. Then the services are enabled, the Kindle Fire displays a compass looking icon on the top status bar beside the Wi-Fi icon and the battery indicator icon.

Called PayPal support and they explained that Kindle Fire and Android devices are not supported and there are no plans to add support at this time. The support rep also said that PayPal Here Reader can only work on devices with data plans.

Teresa, please read the post above yours. That person found that the PayPal Here app did not work on the Fire.

Dayle says:
To clarify, my test was with the Kindle Fire, not the Kindle Fire HD. Irene reported success with PayPal Here on the HD. To install the app, just bring up the website www.1mobile.com on your browser from the HD, search for PayPal Here, and click on it -- the icon is a blue triangle. Then click on the Install button. I can't remember for sure, but I think you will want to already have a paypal account before trying to access the app. Good luck! I hope you'll be another success story for the HD.
