Can I download a book on a wi-fi kindle using the USB connection?

You can download a book to your computer in the usual way and transfer it to the Kindle with the USB connection. If you're in a hot spot, you can download directly to the Kindle - no need for the USB connection at all.

Choose "Download Via Computer" then specify the Kindle by name (rather than to the computer's K4PC) so that it will be DRM/coded for the device. Then I think you direct it to a folder you can find; it may default to My Kindle Content in your Documents folder. Or not.

I wouldn't put it in the My Kindle Content folder. If I'm not mistaken, that's where the files that are DRMed for K4PC go. I think the easiest thing is to download to the desktop. Then you can easily find the files to transfer, or to add to Calibre, or whatever.

I wasn't sure where that folder came from; you are undoubtedly right M.Francis.

I made a folder for Gutenberg downloads; it also functions as a backup if I ever have to replace my Kindle. If you make a folder (rather than put on desktop), you can leave copies of the Amazon books in there -- they will be coded ONLY to the current Kindle, though, not for switching to a new one. But some people want a backup on their own computer.

I have two folders on my desktop. One is for Kindle books downloaded from Amazon--I used to ONLY have the USB option, but now I have the new K3 I have not been using this folder at all (not to mention all the books are DRM for the K2). My real 'back up' for Amazon buys is my Amazon account. I also have a folder I named Mobi and that is for all my e-books from not-Amazon.

Once I download a book to the computer I put the file on my desktop, drag it to my Kindle documents folder via the USB, then put the book away in the folder. I'll probably get rid of the Kindle one actually--I haven't been using it after getting K3 and because of the DRM I'd have to empty it and start over.

We have always downloaded our books to our Kindle via USB on the computer. No 3G, Whispernet or whatever available for us. Fast and simple to do once you get the procedures down. Download via computer; specify which Kindle; download to desktop; plug in the Kindle; drag book title to documents. Done!

My apologies for re-opening an old thread, but can't find any other help.

I received my second Kindle Keyboard WiFi yesterday (for my husband), and have done as you say. I have downloaded the books from my Amazon Kindle library, after specifying which Kindle, to my computer and transferred to the new kindle via USB, but, the books I downloaded show up in the Kindle's documents directory while connected to my computer, but they do not show on the kindle device when disconnected from the computer? I would really appreciate any help I can get. Thx :)

As you can see from the above description, I am very confused :(

That all sounds right. Downloaded for the correct Kindle..and they are in the documents folder? I can't see where it's not right...

Did you try a hard reset? Has the Kindle ever connected by wifi to 'know' it's been deregistered/registered? (if it's a second hand one, or if new was it already assigned to an account?). Do you have a lot of Kindle devices/apps? Perhaps if you have multiple reading apps holding the books you have exceeded the allowed versions under license? (By this I mean if you are running 6 Kindles plus reading apps like on your smartphones, desktops etc, you may have already downloaded 6 copies which is the limit enforced by many publishers--but I thought that would mean a download just wouldn't happen).

If all else fails, call customer service. One thing I am not fond of with the Kindle is that it does have to have at least one wifi (I'm not even sure 3G is good enough anymore even for those models so equipped) connection to enable some functionality such as collections. It may be that if the Kindle arrived without already being assigned to your account, it just doesn't know it belongs to you yet even though Amazon knows.

I am truly only speculating as I am just a customer. If you can't get it fixed quickly call the customer service number. Even overseas that is worth the $$, and the packaging has an overseas # to use.

I hope it's an easy/quick fix!

Thank you JTG for the quick reply.

I am from South Africa. My kindle is a 3G and I have not had any problems whatsoever, but the new one we bought for my husband is a WiFi keyboard - no 3G. We actually don't have a WiFi connection but thought (stupidly?) that if we download books via USB it won't be a problem. The new Kindle was bought direct from Amazon and is registered to my account. We only have the two reading devices.

As you say, maybe the problem is that the device has never been connected to WiFi ... thank you for the help.

Not stupid! When I first moved from the US to overseas it was a with the old 'US only' version using Sprint (vs ATT). I had no 'whispernet' then and could only download via USB which worked fine, but I had previously been 'connected'. When the collections feature came out, as I recall, it wasn't until I took the Kindle back to the US that I got that feature activated.

If you have a local wifi hot spot or a friend/neighbor maybe you can piggy back on it and see if that does the trick. THEN I'd call Amazon.

Don't despair of having no wifi though. With my youngest's Kindle (the new basic one, wifi only) I hopped on a wifi on the way home from work and activated it. When I got home I never 'introduced' the kindle to our home wifi, so his Kindle is purely side-loading at this point. Works fine :).

I am sure I can find a Wifi hot spot and see if that works. This is just a small hitch, but will get it sorted out. Thank you for all the help. It is appreciated :)
