Borrowed an ebook from library. They didn't have a kindle version available but had an ebook u could read in ur browser. Tried to open it on my fire and while I get a screen that shows how to navigate reading the book the actual book wont open. I can read it on my. Computer but not the kindle fire. Is it the browser on the fire that's not compatible

What kind of book was it - did you try to read it using the overdrive app?
ETA - I'm assuming your library uses the overdrive system.

It was just an ebook and on my account at the library, the choice is "download EPUB" which didn't seem to work or "read in browser" which didn't work either.

You can't read epubs on a Kindle natively. Download the Overdrive Media Console app for reading epub library books.

There are numerous differing opinions on whether or not a Kindle will actually support OverDrive Media Console; as a big public library user OMC is a must for me, as I electronically download both Kindle and ePub format. I currently use Motorola Xoom and Google Nexus tablets, both Android based which support Kindle, Nook and Overdrive. So the big question is: will a Kindle Fire or Fire HDX support Overdrive Media Console for library downloads?

I checked the Amazon App Store for you, Ms. Troy, and Overdrive is available for download.

Thank you! That would have been a deal killer for me. Things a device must have: Android OS, built-in WI-FI, OverDrive/library compatibility, and built in Bluetooth. I think I'm finally getting a Kindle. :) Now if they would only add a USB port for flash drives.

I use Overdrive with my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 all the time for library books. When checking out, you have to download the book's EPUB version (and first do a one-time set up of an Adobe account). The Kindle 8.9 native reader is awful, IMO, as it doesn't let you single space the text. The settings seem to allow for single spacing, but it doesn't actually single space. Overdrive seems to be much better. You also don't have to access your Amazon account to get a book.

I have a first-generation Kindle Fire and the Overdrive Media Console works just fine. I use it for library books that don't offer a Kindle version (they're in ePub).

Thanks for all of the input. So many of the posts are people complaining about not being able to read ePubs on their Kindles. I already have an Adobe Digital Editions account, but I know they (Adobe) aren't supported on a few devices. As long as I can still fully utilize my library, I'm a happy camper.

Just Peachy says:
Kindles include eInk Kindles -- you can't read ePubs on them. You are talking about a Fire...completely different device.
