Chris says:
At the end of last year I read that there is a new version of paperwhite in the works that is lighter and has 50% higher res screen (330 pixels per inch vs the current 212 ppi). It was rumored to be available in early 2014. Has anyone heard anything about a release date? I have been holding off buying a paperwhite on this news...

🌲Arual says:
Amazon never gives out info on a new product until it's ready for sale. So until then, all we've got are rumors and guesses.

Chris says:
Yeah, the latest rumors is pretty much what I was looking for. I don't want to buy a PW 2.0 today and then in 32 days find out it is $40 less and I could have had the better device at the price I paid.

Chris says:
After looking around some more online, it looks like the most specific rumor I could find is that it will be available early Q2 2014. So probably worth waiting a couple months to see what happens, at least for me.

David says:
I returned the PW2 once I read the chatter, which included some very detailed specifics, about the next generation Paperwhite. Seeing the delay in shipments subsequently to the current 3G version, I figure some announcement is likely within the next two months. The only problem may be the surge of new orders once the Ice Wine is revealed may push delivery dates even later in the year. Still, worth the wait for me.

Still waiting...I heard the chatter begin in November so I held off getting one with my Christmas time Amazon gift cards. I hope the rumor mill gives us something tasty soon. I am using a Kindle (last gen regular) and a tablet to read. I have joined the legion of people who prefer the matte Kindle screen for reading and want the new features rumored in the new Paperwhite (buttons, anyone?).

JH says:
Yes! BUTTONS! Page turn buttons at the very least!
Also be good to see memory increased a bit.
Everything I hear about the 2014 PW makes we want one. I've grimly held on to my Kindle KB until now. The whole touch screen thing seems over-rated to me. It's hot & humid here in Aust.. finger marks are a problem. If they put the page buttons back I might just upgrade the whole family. That's 5!

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 11, 2014, 10:21:46 PM PST
Fingermarks really don't seem to be a problem on the matte screen the way they are on smartphone gloss screens. (I'm taking the heat/humidity into account.) I'm still with you on going from a KK if they add page turn buttons, though; for me it's about the ease of either-hand action.

I personally doubt they'll increase the memory much, if at all - they're heavily invested in encouraging people to use the cloud storage.

There are already a couple of threads active on this topic, btw.

JH says:
Thanks CBP.

I think it has been suggested that the new version will have a glass screen... don't really know if that can be matte finish.

Anyway I am waiting with fingers crossed.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 12, 2014, 12:42:38 AM PST
I don't see why it couldn't be (glass with matte finish, that is). In any case, since the matte screen is such a crucial factor in bright-sunlight readability, I'm pretty confident it'll be a matte finish, no matter what it's made of. The original info came from this article:
whose author says they've seen a prototype. So bear in mind that a prototype is only a draft version, and not all the features being experimented with in a prototype necessarily end up in the final version (not to mention the author *might* be just talking through his hat LOL), and the listed improvements are:
1) 300ppi screen
2) screen flush with bezel
3) matte glass screen instead of plastic
4) lighter than the PW2
5) custom-built font
6) squeezable haptic-feedback side buttons
7) rear power button
8) ambient light sensor for auto adjustment of the lighting level

I just want to know - how soon will it be released? It's already mid February!

King Al says:
Nobody knows except for Amazon, and they're not going to say until they make the official announcement.

T. Cannon says:
Since it is all rumor at this point it is anybody's guess. If you would like my guess (based on very little but the feeling in my gut that may have something to do with the Chinese food I had for lunch) I will say that Amazon will hold out for a Fall release like always.

To show you how good I am at guessing and predicting I will let you know that I predicted that 3.5 inch floppy drives would never replace 5.25 disks in PCs, and that cell phones would never have more than the most basic digital cameras built into them. :-)

Red Char says:
@King Al - yeah, I know.
@T. Cannon - rumor has been for Q1 of this year though. So, that means sometime before the end of March. I hope that turns out to be true.

Just Peachy says:
We are only half way through Q1. There are 6 more weeks.

So are the paperwhite devices that much better for reading than the Fire tablets?

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 13, 2014, 1:54:39 PM PST
Just Peachy says:
Yep. There is no glare and no backlight shining in your eyes. Also, the battery life is much longer.

The color screen seems nice for any books/magazines with artwork included.

Just Peachy says:
Okay but for reading text, you can't beat the Paperwhite.

PS56k says:
totally different screen technology -

Paperwhite - uses something called "e-ink" that mimics "b/w paper",
has no outdoor lighting/reading issues,
and only uses power when pages are turned.... charge lasts long time.
All the Kindle "e-readers" use this type of screen technology.

Fire - is a normal tablet,
with a LCD screen, just like on a laptop or cellphone's screen....
can't read/see it outdoors, might have glare, charge only lasts 1 day.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 13, 2014, 2:06:35 PM PST
Thanks for the info. After 4 years of owning my kindle 2 I dropped it for the first time and now the screen is messed up. I think its done.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 13, 2014, 2:10:12 PM PST
PS56k says:
The PW is just like your K2 - only better contrast -
AND it has builtin screen edge lighting for reading in dim/dark areas.
but same basic e-ink screen technology that you've already used...

TravelingGal says:
The Fires are also heavier, which I dislike since I read for long periods of time.
