Why is this? All of the other Kindle products come with one... how am I supposed to download a book if I don't currently have wireless?

If you have one of those other Kindle products that cord will work with the Fire as well as any Micro USB cords from various cell phones.

If you don't have one you can purchase the Kindle USB cord for $9.99 USB to Micro USB Cable, White or any standard micro USB cord from any electronics store will work.

Every single time I see that overpriced cable on Amazon, I cringe. Here, get one of these: USB to Micro-USB Cable - 6 Ft. Costs a fraction of the "official" cable, and works great. I have several that I use for my Kindles, phones, cameras, and other electronics.

My fire came with an electric plug with a removable USB cable. See if your cable is attached to electric plug.

Mine came with a charging cord that can be unplugged to be a usb cord... took me a LONG time to figure this out!

Then your Fire was speshul, or you ordered a separate white Kindle USB cable/power adapter.

The Kindle Fires all come with a black power cord that has a typical "brick" plug--it's not one you can remove to expose the USB end.

Mine came with a "brick plug". I'm curious to know whether or not newer Fires, or possibly refurbished Fires have a detachable USB cord on the charger. I've never heard of them being like that before.

edited for tense

And, my Kindle Basic doesn't come with an adapter for charging from the wall. Oh, whine, whine, whimper, whimper, woe is me.

Well, no. My cord is white and I did not order it separate. Don't know what else to say.

The Fire does not come with a white cord of any kind. You must have gotten that cord somewhere else. Did you buy the Fire new from Amazon?

a standard usb doesnt work, believe me Ive tried about 10 different ones and nothing happens. what charger does it come with and where can i buy it?

A standard USB does work. I've never found one that does not. You can also use any USB charger that delivers at least 5W (preferably 9W) of charging power.

Grimwinder says:
The proper cable is a USB to Micro USB (micro-b connector on one end, not one with both ends the same) which should allow you to connect to a computer. This will charge the Kindle, but very slowly. Like this one-

AmazonBasics USB Cable - 2.0 A Male to Micro B - 6 Feet (1.8 Meters)

The charger is this one-

Amazon Kindle 9W PowerFast Adapter for Accelerated Charging

Which will also need the same USB cable, but will charge much quicker.

No Bruce, it has to be a micro USB to work on the Kindles. The standard USB plug is way too big.

According to the product description pages, every Kindle Fire currently offered for sale comes with a USB cable. So...what are you whining about?

Thank you! This was the info I needed. In my case, I purchased the Kindle "Power Fast" charger. I've had the USB cord plugged into the charging "box" for so long, I had forgotten it was a USB cable!
