Carol R says:
I have several duplicate books and games on my Kindle. When I remove one, both disappear. Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks.

What makes you think they are duplicates? You can have a book in more than one collection, but it doesn't make it a duplicate.

How are you removing them? (Sounds silly, I know, but sometimes I clean up my Kindle by connecting it to my computer and deleting stuff -- carefully.)

It sounds to me, though, as though you may have a syncing problem. Do you use collections?

Whether you do or not, try this:
sync your Kindle; disconnect from wifi; restart your Kindle (hard restart by holding your power button for 20 to 30 seconds and then pressing or flicking to turn it back on); wait patiently (or impatiently) for everything to reset and your collections to repopulate. Connect to wifi & sync again. Does one of your apparent duplicates now disappear?

Carol R says:
For example, I have a book in a collection and its duplicate not in any collection. If I try deleting the one not in a collection by saying 'remove from device', both copies will be deleted. I just don't want all of these loose copies hanging out when they are already filed in a collection.

I hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Carol, sounds like you need to sort by collections--do this on the home page by moving the 5-way up to the top.

As Tippetarius says, this is a sorting issue, not a duplicate issue. Even though you see the same title twice, it is only a "tag" pointing to one book. Once you sort correctly, you won't see the individual books that are in collections.

Collections aren't like folders on a computer. The book files don't actually reside "in" that collection. They are just tags that point to the book/file.

That happened to me once, and using the above method (which is in my previous post), I fixed it. (ETA: And it happened despite the books being sorted by Collection, which is how I always sort them.)

Carol R says:
You're right. It was just a sorting issue. Why didn't I think of that? So simple. Thank you so much.

ThisIsMe says:
It's not a sorting issue for me. I'm using the Kindle for PC app right now.

I also have a problem with duplicates. For example, there are 500 items one day. The next there are 1000 -- two of each entry. I do not use collections. There is one list -- now with duplicates for each entry. My content folder does not have duplicate files, but two entries appear in the "All Items" and "Downloaded Items" lists. Regardless of which I select, the book opens.

My library is large (takes FOREVER to load the application! -- which could be caused by the duplicate issue -- and I don't want to go through and delete every other book. I've tried re-syncing, updating the software, etc. Still duplicate entries remain.

I've had this happen as well, and finally figured out that it's because I use Calibre to update the metadata. Even if you update some trivial bit of metadata (not like the title or author), it makes the two entries - the one on Calibre and the one on the Kindle - different. So if you use Calibre to delete the items from the Kindle, it won't delete the mis-matched ones. Then you load the revised version from Calibre onto the Kindle - and you now have 2 copies. Yet, if you delete one from the kindle (using 'remove from device') it'll delete both! Even if you don't use Calibre, it might happen if there's a tiny difference in the metadata somewhere between 2 versions or 2 downloads.

This has happened to me on the Android Kindle app on several different android devices.
For me it was not about sorting, or using another app to sideload onto the device.
For some reason the app duplicated most (but not all) of my book titles. Looking into the kindle directory confirmed that
there was only one copy of each book.

My solution was to back up my kindle directory, go into the APP manager under Settings and click the "Clear Data" button
This required me to sign back onto Amazon Kindle when I re-launched the app, the titles are now only listed once.

Note on the Android Kindle app there are no options to organize books into collections, only to view as list or grid, and to sort by author or title.

I haven't started using Calibre, but will watch when I do.

As for my ongoing problem... Sometimes is corrects itself. That is, in the example I said one day I'd have 500 books, the next day 1000. A few days later I'm back to 500. It stays good for a bit, then back to double for a while, then back to single. I have no idea what's causing the problem. I'd understand changing metadata if it was only duplicating the items I've opened/read, but it duplicates both opened and "new" items, but not all new or opened. There is no visible rhyme or reason at this point.

I updated my kindle software last night and that turns out to be a mistake, all my books are duplicated now.

Nina says:
With me it's not a sorting issue. I have 4th generation basic kindle. My collections disappeared; I got them back by de-registering and re-registering. Everything was great! But about 5 days later, every single book and document I have on them was inexplicably duplicated onto the home screen. If I delete it from the home screen, it's deleted from the collection. The duplicate links are still visible, even if I sort by collections. (I know they're not real duplicates; I'm just calling them that.)

How can I unclutter my homescreen? I now have 149 pages with 1,039 items, incl. 12 pages of Collections.

Thank you.

I am having the same problem as Nina. I have kindle touch. My collections are there but when I updated my kindle I now have all books both in collections and in my home screen.

Is your sort option on "Collections"?

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 7, 2014, 1:37:43 PM PDT
I don't know how to sort. I just add and remove from collections

Posted on Jul 7, 2014, 1:38:50 PM PDT
Thank you I have sorted by collections and it fixed it... My last hard restart allowed collections to be used. before it was "greyed" out.

Posted on Jul 17, 2014, 2:53:07 AM PDT
I have the same problem but if I sort it by collection the clippings and vocabulary builder and the dictionaries disappear.
Isn't it possible to have the collections, the books that aren't in any collection and the clippings and vocabulary builder and the dictionaries all in the same place without having the copy of the books in the collections running around?
Thanks :)

Thank you Tippetarius. I had the same problem that Carol R. did and your suggestion worked like a charm.
