Does your paperwhite bezel pop?

Ryan says:
On my third paperwhite and about to return two. The first one developed a fairly bad pop whenever the lower bezel is pressed in any way firmly. At first I thought it happened trying to pry it from the kindle case, but I also noticed a much less frequent pop when holding the second paperwhite on the lower left, and a very slight pop on today's replacement. Is this normal behavior or an indication that something is coming loose by the four LED lights?

Why on earth would you press the bezel at all? And firmly at that???? If I press my car door firmly it I don't do that. Man!

Ryan says:
In the first case it was to remove it from the case. In the second it was lightly gripping it while holding it.

It is actually quite difficult to pop the bezel. It takes a tool and considerable effort to pry it open as demonstrated by this video

If yours behave like you described, there is something wrong during the assembly process. It's not normal. Probably, they didn't glue or snap the metal bezel to the rubber base correctly.

Ryan, I think that you need to use the large orange Contact Us button to the right to talk with Amazon Kindle CS and talk with them about it - use the live chat or the call back feature if you can, not email. If you can't see a Contact Us button on this page, then go to and contact CS. I advise using Live Chat or the Call Me Back feature and not email, as they will have your account details available to them immediately when you talk with them.

I've already done so. I was prompted to ask here by a replacement kindle making the noise out of the case without my having done anything to it. If it happened during assembly and I have two of them I figured it was either a common thing that no one bothered mentioning or a rare issue that I hit twice. Thanks for the assist!

If I press mine REALLY hard, I hear a slight pop. Lighten up on the grip.

Yes, I wouldn't say I'm squeezing really hard in either case. In one I only noticed it once and in the other I can't help but notice it. I suspect there's an assembly screwup on that one.

I just squeezed and jiggled my PW (ybik) all the way around the bezel, and it neither pops, nor squeaks, nor wiggles in any way.

Except when I tickle it, but that's a different story.

I received four paperwhites total and found one popped very noticeably, one barely noticeably, and the other two were fine. I ended up giving up on the paperwhite and going with a $69 kindle as I could not get past the blotchy screen.

It's not supposed to have blotches at all (mine does not -- it's practically perfect in every way), so that's a bigger issue, if you as me, than the popping. The SCREEN is the important thing. If they can't get you a nice one, the BK is a great little device.

My bezel round the bottom pops as well, only when pressed with fairly firmly. Not a huge issue i guess..

No, mine doesn't pop or make any other noise no matter how I hold it.

Several of my bones and joints pop all the time. I wonder if I am still under warranty....

My bezel pops as well and has the entire time I have owned my kindle paper white. I originally thought that holding onto the right corner with one and and reading was just the improper way to hold the kindle since it would pop anytime I released grip. However, I realized it had nothing to do with my grip. The bezel is curved upwards away from the frame which causes it to 'pop' in and out of place whenever I grip it on the bottom right corner. I assume this was a production problem as it seems the glue is faulty. Hopefully Amazon will replace this.

Our Kindle Fire HD pops as well, right around where the ports are. Nowhere else, just there, has for awhile, it started a few months ago. We bought it last November so it is over a year old. Nothing else is wrong with it and it has the 2 year warranty, just have not contacted Amazon about it cause it does not seem to affect it.

I ended up returning all the Paperwhites last year and recently purchased a second generation one. It had a crooked screen - the gray border at the bottom was distractingly lopsided, the replacement had a bright pixel, and the third and final one is perfect of me, but still pops. It doesn't impact the device whatsoever, but the casing does crackle when squeezed at the corner or side. You can tell it doesn't fit together perfectly, but nothing's perfect. :-)

Just tried it, our new Kindle PW does pop when pressed, on the left side. Doesn't affect it either though. We are just not purposely pressing on them, and trying to not hold them too firmly either. Ours have never been in cases though, if that matters. We just use sleeves that we bought and some I made for them instead.

I know this is an old post but I bought one in 2014 (refurb) and it did the same thing. Just returned it but they sent me another refurb that still makes the pop with a medium to light squeeze. Annoying. Should be more solid. I don't want this thing to fall apart. Going to contact them again and try to get a NEW one and see if it is any better.

You're not expecting them to give you a NEW one for free are you? Because that would be ridiculous.
