With the release calendar coming to a close in the next couple of months, I think the time has come to formulate our "Best of" lists for this year.

I'll admit, I was kind of surprised by several of the albums that came out this year. Killer releases by established veterans, up and coming acts rising up from the underground, and other surprising finds. Here are some of mine (yes, in some kind of order)...

1) Katatonia- Dead End Kings
2) Barren Earth- The Devil's Resolve
3) Between the Buried and Me- The Parallax II: Future Sequence
4) Gojira- L'Enfant Sauvage
5) Meshuggah- Koloss
6) Daylight Dies- A Frail Becoming
7) The Contortionist- Intrinsic
8) Swallow the Sun- Emerald Forest and the Blackbird
9) Allegaeon- Formshifter
10) The Foreshadowing- Second World
11) Stealing Axion- Moments
12) Periphery- Periphery II: This Time It's Personal
13) Be'lakor- Of Breath and Bone
14) Kamelot- Silverthorn
15) Epica- Requiem for the Indifferent

That's how it stands, right now. There are more, but these lists always shift for me...we'll see how this one changes.

Alright, enough from me. Now, it's your turn...

These lists will probably change when I get my hands on the new Doro, Ensiferum, Elvenking, Kamelot, Bloodbound, Aerosmith, and more. I just listed all the albums I got from 2012 so far and ranked them. (had about 23 metal albums total) My tastes are more towards clean vocals and the list reflects that. The ones that did not make the list: Sonata Arctica, Delain, In Solitude.

I'm working on my list, but I feel like I should hold a spot for the new Graveyard, which should be in my mailbox this week.

For me it's been an easy year because most of my favorite bands have released something; which also means that my list is biased, because it contains my favorite bands; whom I'm always going to rate higher than most.

converge-all we love we leave behind
dying fetus-reign supreme
napalm death-utilitarian
pig destroyer-book burner

Are my favorites that I actually own and have given repeated listens to.

life once lost-ecstatic trance
pathology-time of great purification

Are bands that are my favorites, that I've only heard samples of, that I will own, and that I'm biased for, because they're my favorites.

aura noir-out to die

Is a new favorite band; who I'm now biased towards.

Are releases that I bought this year and liked pretty well; but as the year progressed, lost steam with me; and now, they'll probably be sold off.

The new dinosaur jr (i bet on sky) is pretty good too. One of my favorites of the year.

Hmmmmmm....... I love In this Moment, but Blood? Best of 2012? That was probably the worst cd I bought this year. What about it did you like?

Ash Krueger says:
I found it ridiculously catchy and I kind of hate myself for it. I was not a fan of the last two albums. "The Dream" was too poppy and that last record I didn't dig at all. I don't know why because it was closer to the first album in terms of style but I just didn't feel any of the songs. I do like Maria as a singer and look forward to hearing the tune she just recorded for Jake E. Lee's solo album.

I need to go listen to some Judas Priest, Death, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Venom, Slayer, and Iron Maiden now before I lose my metal cred. lol.

Nobody listed Abiotic... Why?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 14, 2012, 6:13:39 AM PST
Ash Krueger says:
Not my kind of music. I have no idea what the singer is saying. If it was instrumental I'd prefer it actually.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 14, 2012, 7:42:56 AM PST
A Star Crossed Wasteland is my favorite album by them. Ha! I love Maria Brink. But.....Blood sounds exactly like Korn with Maria on vox. The title song is the ONLY song I like. The bland songwriting and riffs are just dreadful. My opinion.

Ash Krueger says:
Ah man, don't say that! Korn? I hate myself even more now because I loathe Korn. No love for "Adrenalize?" Oh well. Did you hear about her lending vox to the new Jake E. Lee disc? Her, Ronin Zander of Cheap Treak, and Paul Di'Anno of Iron Maiden. That's going to be one crazy record.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 14, 2012, 11:29:18 AM PST
Fair enough, But as far as new and upcoming bands they would have to be top 10 this year IMO. I havent heard many new bands that i actually enjoy.

C. Harding says:
I don't know anything about them, but I looked them up on Encyclopedia Metallum, which states they play deathcore. That's probably why no one has listed them. I'm not knocking deathcore, it's just not something most of the posters here care for.

Beirne, Surge.........waiting? What say you?

Theres been so much music this year. Im still trying to narrow down my top picks

A customer says:
I guess Torture was my favorite. It topped Evisceration Plague (no easy task). Koloss was great, too.

This MUST be mentioned: Marilyn Manson - Born Villain. Fan-fwiggin'-tastic album, right up there with Antichrist and Mechanical. A true return to form, and definitely worth anyone's time.

Posted on Dec 21, 2012, 10:27:48 PM PST
Kevin Beirne says:
I missed a lot of the 2012 releases you cats speak of. So, naturally, I can only comment on the stuff that I picked up.

I definitely dig Torture, but feel it did not meet Evisceration Plague, just like that one better.

Meshuggah's Koloss is indeed effing fantastic, and excellent followup to Obzen.

I really dig At the Gate of Sethu, and feel that the negative internet vibe surrounding it was totally bogus and unnecessary. Great album. Did not top Those Whom The Gods Detest, but that does make it as bad as people made it out to be.

Aeon's Aeon's Black is fantastic.

Goatwhore's Blood For the Master, great album.

I do not like Cattle Decapitation's Monolith of Inhumanity...some heavy stuff - but, that lame singing voice needs to go.

Overkill - The Electric Age - like it waaay better than Dark Roots of Earth

Behold...The Arctopus - Horrorscension

Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind

Now I do not have the new Cryptopsy, or the new Mekong Delta, among other releases I missed....

Posted on Dec 21, 2012, 11:08:59 PM PST
A customer says:
I still disagree on Sethu. The album just sucks to me. It's the only bad thing Nile has ever done in their career, so it's not unforgivable.

Monolith of Inhumanity just came out this year, and it's already in the running for most overrated extreme metal album ever. Congratulations are in order.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 22, 2012, 4:30:00 AM PST
At the Gates of Sethu was lackluster! I played it prolly 20 times and there was no connection. To me, everything was just out of place. ( I know you love that though Beirne. Ha!) The clean vocals weren't even that bad debate to hate....
