how can this thread be taken seriously when the OP's list of "20 favorite metal albums" isn't even all metal albums?

Wuchak says:
Burb, notice I said "all genres"? There's not one album I listed that doesn't somehow fit within the parameters of "metal." Try not to be so one-dimensional. No offense!

I forgot to fit in my list somewhere:

Death Angel ACT III
Bathory - NORDLAND I

Also, I have a hard time figuring out which album to add by such bands as Kreator and Sodom, so let me give 'em an honorary mention here.

Yes, I highly recommend Isis to anyone into all things heavy and cerebral. Earlier releases focused on intense walls of sound/guitar and raging vocals. Isis still incorporate those elements into their newer releases, but allow more spaciousness to play out within the "wall of sound" allowing for something I might call "Ambient metal" Cleanly sung vocals have also crept more into the mix, which I particularly enjoy.
I'd start with their newest one "Wavering Radiant" to get a taste of what they're all about at the moment, then move backwards to "Panopticon" and "Oceanic."
Their album "In the absence of truth" is fantastic, I just think that you can check it out last. Nothing wrong with it, it's massive like all the others, but it's my least listened to album of theirs.

I don't know why I like list threads so much. This will be in absolutely no order, as it's kind of ridiculous to try to rank great albums. They are all great to me, and move me in some way. OK here goes, I have no idea exactly what I'm gonna put on this list right now, but here goes:

Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence, Hrimthursum
Paradise Lost - Shades of God
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Swallow the Sun - Hope
Hypocrisy - S/T,Final Chapter,Virus,Latest (can't choose)
Overkill - Taking Over,Horrorscope,Bloodletting,Killbox (can't choose)
The Crown - Deathrace King
Bloodbath - First Two (hard to choose)
Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising(or any of them really)
Dark Funeral - Diabolis Interium
Behexen - Rituale Satanum, By the Blessing of Satan
Nehëmah - Light of a Dead Star
Azaghal - Omega
Naglfar - Sheol
Hail of Bullets - ...Of Frost and War
Asphyx - Last One on Earth
Evoken - Antithesis of Light
Shape of Despair - Illuions Play
Bathory - Nordland I,Blood Fire Death,Hammerheart(can't choose)
Dissection - First Two (can't choose)
Candlemass - First Two (can't choose)
Dark Tranquillity - Last Three (can't choose)
Uncanny - Splenium For Nyktophobia
Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun
Unanimated - Ancient God of Evil (any of them really)
Megiddo - The Devil and the Whore
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath
Insomnium - Above the Weeping World
Melechesh - Emissaries

I could go on, but I'm way past 20. I couldn't live a week without any of these.

MOTORHEAD - Ace Of Spades

I only numbered my list to limit it to twenty albums; like I said they were in no specific order. And I don't see anything wrong with going over twenty. This is just a means to turn others on to some great albums, past and present.

I checked out some Isis songs on youtube from TRUTH and WAVERING and liked 'em. They're ambient post-metal in the manner of Agalloch, who's one of my favorite bands. If you're not familiar with Agalloch be sure to check out THE MANTLE -- great meloncholic, atmospheric, brooding post-metal!

@Durrkk: I'm enjoying The Mantle more and more, but that album really had to grow on me for sure. You should probably also just skip Isis and go straight for Neurosis. My $0.02.

Well, that would be silly. Why not enjoy both bands? Yeah yeah, I heard it all before - But if it weren't for Neurosis there would be no Isis. Blah blah. All great bands spring from the seeds of great bands that have come before. Next.

I originally wanted to fit King Diamond's THE EYE somewhere on my list, but other albums beat it out; I'm also a big fan of THE SPIDER'S LULLABYE and (of course) ABIGAIL.

Amanda: In contrast to your experience I loved THE MANTLE the second I heard it. PALE FOLKLORE and ASHES AGAINST THE GRAIN took a little longer. I hope they have a new (full) album out soon; it's been over 3 years.

@Samantha Magistrale

I salute you for including "Cuatro" by Flotsam and Jetsam. That album is a top notch metal/rock album. I thought about including that one on my list above, but didn't for one reason or another...
