You should probably ask for posters five favorite songs not performed by the bands you've excluded, because by excluding them, some folks invariably won't be able to post what are, in fact, their five favorites. Nitpicking aside:

"I Wanna Be Your Dog" - The Stooges
"Heroin" - Velvet Underground
"Psycho" - The Sonics
"My Back Pages" - The Byrds version
"Back Door Man" - The Doors version

I gave away my top two in the Monkees thread earlier. If I were to list a personal Top 5 from the Hot 100 charts (my main passion), it would likely look like:

1. Cherish - The Association
2. Daydream Believer - The Monkees
3. So Much In Love - The Tymes

And about a 500 way tie for spots #4 and #5...haha.

The irony for me is that I actually have no trouble listing my favorite 60's songs (singles) and not including the Beatles, Stones, Kinks etc. I don't mean that to sound the wrong way but none of those groups were the first ones I fell in love with when I fell in love with the music of the 60's. And without denying their timelessness as BANDS, for pure pop pleasure/singles, I've always been more drawn to the likes of The Association, The Drifters, The Young Rascals, Smokey & The Miracles, The Zombies, The Monkees, etc.

Just a personal preference I guess...

Without You - Manfred Mann
I Need Love - The DC 5
Rain On the Roof - The Lovin' Spoonful
All I Really Want to Do - The Byrds
Along Comes Mary - The Association

Just five that come to mind, without including the obvious groups.
Have at least 50 more favorites.
At least 5 more could come from The Zombies alone.

Hi Ed,

Yeah, "Along Comes Mary" is awesome! The SOUND of the bass/bottom end is what always jumps out at me, then the rhythmic hand claps etc. It's a great one! If it weren't for "Windy", my second favorite, then "Mary" would be #2 for me. You know you really a like an artist when you have to put "Never My Love" as your fourth favorite hit of theirs and yet it's still a four star song! LOL.

But I always tell people to take me with a grain of salt because I'm a hopeless romantic in every way. And I'm a huge "love songs" lover. I mentioned in another post somewhere how my sweetheart and I are the type to dedicate songs to one another on the evening love songs programs (at least when the DJ's were live...LOL). Nonetheless, we have our trusted playlists at home as well and share a mutual love for pop songs/charts. But "Cherish" is always one of "our songs". As are about a 1000 others.

Right now we are enjoying "Yes I'm Ready" by Barbara Mason (#5, 1965). Another one that was flirting with that #4 and #5 spot on my above list. Just LOVE this song! And the strings. And the production. And, well, everything!

I only know "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" via covers by The White Stripes and Elvis Costello. Who does it originally? I'd love to hear it. I guess I could just look it up, of course.

I'll see if I can narrow it down... (To make it even more of a fun challenge, I also left out the Beach Boys and Bob Dylan.)

2. "Son of a Preacher Man" - Dusty Springfield
3. "Mr. Tambourine Man" - The Byrds
4. "Baby, I Love You" - The Ronettes
5. "Alone Again, Or" - Love
