OK..This is my first post for a "new discussion." Be nice! :-)

My question is name "1" artist/band (regardless of genre) that since you became a fan of music, has been able to remain in your top 5 all-time favs list (the longest) through the years. As we all know tastes can change greatly over time but somehow a certain artist or band has been able to stay in your favorites list over a huge portion of your life.

Mine would be Rush (since 1983). <--This is where you need to be nice..lol I know many do not like Geddy's voice..lol

I would expect the time range and musical artists to vary greatly due to the age of my fellow Amazon comment posters!

Working Man says:
My one constant would have to be Led Zeppelin, although they have not been together for 30 years now and their post-Zeppelin stuff is inconsitant, they are still my favorite rock band of all time.

As for Rush, you can tell bymy screen name that I am also a fan. I've liked Rush since I first 2112 around 1975 or 1976. I didn't love some of their 80's music, but they are in my top 10 and sneak into my top 5 from time to time. My all-time top five looks something like this.

top five:
Led Zeppelin
Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, the Firm and solo)
Deep Purple/Rainbow
Jethro Tull

next five:
Black Sabbath (primarily with Ozzy, but Dio is also good)
Robin Trower
Eric Clapton (Cream, Derek and the Dominos, Blind Faith and solo)

I know you only asked for one, but this list is pretty constant since the 70's. Newer artists (U2, the Pretenders, Joe Bonamassa, the Black Crowes) may sneak in once in a while, but I am primarily a 70's rock junkie.

I'd say Led Z. They've never been my favorite but they've always been in my top 5.
As a teen, CCR/Led and other pop groups.
Now it's Free/Led/Pie.

Glad to see my question made sense! :-) Yea the 70's rock gets a lot of airplay in my house too. I like all the artists mentioned above although I will be honest, I only know Mott The Hoople's rendition of "All the Young Dudes" (which I like better than Bowie's) from them. May need to check out more.
Btw...nice name "Workin Man!" Other bands that have stayed in my top 10 (not sure where exactly..lol) Pink Floyd, King Crimson & Led Zeppelin.

Black Sabbath has been a favorite of mine for 40 years. Love them with Ozzy,Dio and Gillan. The sound has changed constantly but not for worse. Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin(With the exception of the awful In Thru the Outdoor) Iron Maiden, and Robin Trower round out my top 5. Rush was great in the 70s not a fan after Hemispheres and Farewell to Kings.

Alt9999 says:
Probably Neil Young for me. For about the past 20 years.

Not sure if the bands I loved as a teenager necessarily have been top 5 consistently for me. I still love The Replacements, Husker Du, Minutemen, etc... But I found a lot of great new stuff in the early 90's.

I have everything by Rush on vinyl through 'Hold Your Fire'. I bought 'Presto' when it came out and never really got into it. I guess I've never gone back.

Pink Floyd, Thievery Corporation, Portishead, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Dylan.

the middle two are more chill/down tempo stuff, but easily two of the best modern unrecognized groups.

Rush since 1984. I received a Tower Records gift certificate for jr. high graduation. I used it to buy "Exit...Stage Left" on cassette. Then there was no turning back.
